"It is increasingly common that extreme heat causes weather-related deaths, disproportionately affecting marginalized communities, outdoor workers, and the urban poor," according to the latest https://bit.ly/4e6WzRo's issue. The All India Disaster Mitigation Institute (AIDMI)'s (https://bit.ly/4e6WzRo's) latest edition examines "Extreme Heat Adaptation and Mitigation Programming: Lessons from Affected Populations." Protecting communities from extreme heat requires proactive measures. South Asia is experiencing a rise in extreme heat events as a result of climate change, which poses significant health and socio-economic risks to vulnerable populations. 📑 Learning from the past to develop better roadmaps 🛣️ 🗞️ On 26 August, the @World Health Organization (WHO) launched a global Strategic Preparedness and Response Plan as part of its efforts to prevent outbreaks of human-to-human transmission of #mpox after a 😷 public health emergency of international concern was declared by the Director-General on 14 August. It is not uncommon for #humanitarian responses to repeat mistakes and fail to take advantage of the lessons learned in the past. 📯 Evaluators need protection‼️ Last week, the key theme of the 🌐 #worldhumanitarianday was a call to observe universally accepted international laws to regulate the conduct of armed conflict and limit its impact. In 2023, a record number of #humanitarian workers deaths were reported and it is expected more deaths this year. The frontline workers aren't the only ones in need of protection. Additionally evaluators do need protection to be embedded into mechanisms to minimise the risk factors as they do their work. 🖋️ In this latest commentary by Amra Lee titled, "Addressing protection in humanitarian evaluations: what ALNAP ’s new guidance needs to achieve" shares, she highlights why adding protection into the updated #OCEDDAC criteria guidance currently in progress is critical. "Decreasing respect for the rules of war are meanwhile having devastating consequences for civilians in need of protective humanitarian action - from Gaza and Myanmar to Ukraine and Sudan, among too many other crises." Oxfam's Global Programme Director, Adama Coulibaly, calls for the humanitarian sector to learn more from local partners and communities. 💬 He emphasises the importance of listening to local voices and incorporating their expertise and experience into humanitarian assistance.
