Really lovely to see the Greater Cambridge Shared Planning Service planners on-site at Rubicon in Eddington - North West Cambridge Development last week, continuing the conversation after the 2024 Housing Design Award win for our project, which is now also shortlisted for the Architects’ Journal Awards in the Residential category! The five mid-rise, highly-dense residential blocks draw inspiration for their colours from the surrounding landscape - seamlessly blending into the palette of wetlands and local species plantings in a generous urban edge for Hill Group UK's master plan, no matter the weather! Thanks to Sarah Chubb and Paul Robertshaw for highlighting the 'gentle density' of Rubicon.

🏆 We are thrilled that Rubicon has won big at the Housing Design Awards - huge congratulations to our clients, collaborators, and all who were involved in bringing the 186-home residential quarter to life! This prestigious award is the only one supported by all three major professional institutions – RICS, RIBA, and RTPI – and is judged by a panel of national experts across fields ranging from planning and biodiversity to urban design and low-carbon development. Sarah Chubb, Principal Urban Designer at Greater Cambridge Shared Planning Service says of the scheme, ''what we are learning is that if the original architects are kept right through to the implementation stage, that the high-quality schemes that were promised at the reserve, as well as to the offices and the council, are actually being delivered on the ground. ABA were retained by Hill, and that really represents their commitment to delivering the quality that was promised to us - and the best thing about it is that we're also finding the schemes are being delivered in a more efficient and quicker way.'' Rubicon, a residential quarter in Eddington - North West Cambridge Development, is part of Hill Group UK and University of Cambridge’s ambitious North West Cambridge Development, building on the legacy of the 19th-century warehouse paradigm. An evening of kindred spirits – thank you to everyone who joined us at the Barbican on Tuesday for Alison’s lecture, part of the Architecture on Stage series, hosted by The Architecture Foundation and the Barbican Centre in London. In her thought-provoking presentation, Alison traced the foundations of her practice through projects such as Windward House, Cohen Quad and Cadence. She drew on her early influences from Europe after arriving in London in 1988, which embedded a sense of memory, material culture and a deeply human experience of place throughout her later works. Concluding the evening was a delightful conversation led by chair, jamie fobert, sparked by questions on the inclusion of indigenous voices in Canadian projects, advocating for female founders and architects in a challenging industry, and more. #ArchitectureOnStage #AlisonBrooksArchitects #KindredSpirits #ArchitectureFoundation #Barbican

We are honoured that Unity Place, a collaboration with Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios (FCBStudios), Gort Scott, RM_A and Brent Council, has been shortlisted for the Neave Brown Award for Housing. This recognition comes at a crucial time when the agenda for affordable housing is at the forefront in the UK. Key points from the press: RIBA describes the project as a "key element" in the 15-year South Kilburn Regeneration Programme, delivering 235 homes that restore historical street patterns and harmonise high-density housing with surrounding low- to medium-rise buildings through contextually sensitive materials. Astrid Smitham, founder of Apparata and last year’s winner, highlighted the shortlist’s emphasis on strong client-architect partnerships in delivering high-quality housing, “At a time when the UK sets out to build 1.5 million new homes, this shortlist shows the importance of great partnerships between clients and architects in delivering housing of the very highest standard, that everyone deserves." RIBA President Muyiwa Oki PRIBA added that social housing is "a great opportunity" for architects, not a limitation, "This year's shortlist reaffirms that creating social housing should not be seen as a limitation to architects, but a great opportunity." We are honoured to share the shortlist with Pollard Thomas Edwards, AL-JAWAD PIKE and Page\Park Architects. Congratulations and good luck to all!
