In #Myanmar on 25 June the Beijing-brokered ceasefire in place since January broke down with the Ta’ang National Liberation Army #TNLA announcing the resumption of Operation #1027 in northern #Shan state. The TNLA stated that military forces had repeatedly violated the ceasefire and prior to the 25 June resumption of clashes, warned that if the violations were to continue, it would resume the offensive. Between 25 and 30 June, the TNLA has seized control of strategic towns including Nawnghkio and Kyaukme. Regime forces are reportedly besieging themselves in Lashio town by destroying connecting bridges while conducting indiscriminate retaliatory airstrikes on civilian areas. 22 civilians were killed between 25 and 30 June in military airstrikes. Cross-border trade with China has not resumed since the January ceasefire. Beijing will likely intervene again, although it appears increasingly frustrated with the junta.

AKE's #MOTW highlights the renewed outbreak of unrest in #NewCaledonia this week after leaders of the pro-independence Field Action Coordinating Cell (CCAT) activist group were arrested on 19 June and subsequently transferred to France. At least one death connected to the unrest has been reported after emergency services were disrupted by roadblocks, which have proliferated the French overseas territory along with arson attacks, vandalism and clashes between protesters and security forces. Risks of intensified civil unrest as well as widening business and transport disruptions are likely to escalate.

In recent years, "foreign agents" laws have proliferated across Europe & Eurasia, reflecting a growing trend among governments to regulate and limit foreign influence within their borders. AKE’s #MOTW of the week highlights violent protests that erupted in the capital #BuenosAires on 12 June after the Senate passed a crucial bill for libertarian President #JavierMilei's economic reforms after Vice President #VictoriaVillarruel broke a 36-36 tie. Demonstrators burned cars and threw Molotov cocktails amid clashes with federal security forces, who fired tear gas and water cannons. The bill – which includes plans to privatise state entities, boost investment with tax breaks and grant special presidential powers – will now undergo an article-by-article vote in the Senate before returning to the lower house for approval of modifications. It marks a major boost to Milei’s economic deregulation agenda which has run into resistance in opposition-dominated Congress. The protests come amid a widespread popular backlash against Mieli’s austerity measures – hiking inflation, dampening economic activity, growth and production, and increasing poverty – in a bid to reduce the budget deficit and soaring inflation. Further risks of major protests, with the potential to turn violent, will remain heightened as the bill moves through Congress.

AKE’s #MOTW highlights attacks in #India since the start of the year. India has faced an increase in communal violence in Manipur and across the northeast, while Maoist groups remain a threat. The returning Modi government will need to mitigate these security challenges in the months ahead.

AKE's #MOTW highlights the wave of demonstrations in #Taiwan since 21 May against a contentious parliamentary reform package passed by the opposition-controlled Legislative Yuan on 28 May to expand the chamber's powers and provide lawmakers greater oversight of the government. Protests were largely concentrated in Taipei and marked the island's largest in a decade. The reforms' passage will likely sustain further protests and legislative conflict.
