NAVIGATING THE SKIES OF COMPLIANCE BY Martin Palmer, Co-Founder of Hurricane Modular Commerce Ltd Air cargo companies encounter a variety of compliance challenges in managing supply chains. Among them are adhering to international sanctions and export controls, as well as complying with tariffs and customs regulations. A key issue is distinguishing between goods that are permissible to ship and those that are not, along with verifying the recipients of shipments, often within short time constraints. The air cargo industry requires speed and reliability while maintaining high standards of security and safety. In recent years, the air cargo industry has witnessed a sweeping introduction of stringent regulatory requirements across the globe, underscoring the critical importance of compliance in ensuring safe and secure air transportation. Key initiatives such as the Air Cargo Advance Screening (ACAS) in the USA, the Import Control System 2 (ICS2) in the European Union, Pre-Load Air Cargo Targeting (PACT) in Canada, and Pre-Load Data Informed Cargo Targeting (PreDict) in the United Kingdom have been established to enhance the security framework surrounding international air cargo operations. https://lnkd.in/eK7X8n99 #AirCargo #AirFreight #SupplyChain #Logistics #AirCargoWeek #ACW #Cargonews

The push towards sustainability in aviation has never been more urgent. As the world seeks to combat climate change, the aviation industry faces the formidable challenge of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Central to this goal is the rapid scaling up of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production. However, the path to widespread SAF adoption is fraught with challenges that require coordinated efforts from multiple stakeholders. https://lnkd.in/dUUiSqGp #SustainabilityInAviation #AviationIndustry #ClimateChangeAction #NetZero2050 #SustainableAviationFuel #ClimateActionNow #GreenAviation #EcoFriendlyTravel #AirCargo #AirFreight #SupplyChain #Logistics #AirCargoWeek #ACW #Cargonews

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES BY Glyn Hughes, Director General of The International Air Cargo Association TIACA By looking at the pure data, the numbers would indicate that air cargo volumes have not just returned to pre-Covid levels but, in fact. the industry has moved on beyond them, with the last six months showing double-digit growth compared to 2023. But this then generates several often-asked questions; Where is the business coming from? Will it continue? What will happen in Q4? Is it all e-commerce? The answers to those questions are not easily addressed. What we do know November 2023 saw Houthis in Yemen announce they would attack commercial ships associated with Israel, the US and Europe sailing through the Red sea in response to Israel’s military action in Gaza. Up to the middle of July, Bloomberg reported that there have been over 65 reported incidents with 18 ships having been struck with missiles. Despite military action targeting the missile launch sites, the attacks continue. Maritime analysts and risk assessors suggest that the attacks will likely to continue for the remainder of 2024 and into 2025. Maritime operators have stressed they will not return to the shorter more efficient Red Sea shipping lanes until it is safe to do so for crew and cargo. The consequential impact on journey times from Asia to Europe and on overall shipping costs has resulted in the narrowing of air cargo / maritime differentials. A more competitive air cargo industry results in increased volumes. Shortages in shipping containers also promote a shift to air cargo. Campus’Air, a dedicated shipping service tailored to meet the needs of students across Canada, has been launched by WestJet Cargo. 👩🎓✈️ Canada’s geographical size poses unique logistical challenges, particularly for students who move between cities for their education. Unlike smaller countries where trucking is a feasible option, the distances between major Canadian cities make air transport a more practical solution. “Canada is twice the size of the European Union and the second biggest country in the world in terms of space. Trucking is not always an option. It’s very expensive, and it takes too long,” Kirsten de Bruijn, Executive Vice President of WestJet Cargo, explained. “Campus’Air is our way of supporting the academic community, providing them with an affordable, reliable shipping solution that underscores our commitment to fostering education and community development across Canada.” The initial rollout included a select list of universities, chosen based on the volume of student movements and the universities’ willingness to participate in the marketing efforts required to inform students about the new service. As the programme grows, more universities are being added to the list. “We started inquiring with universities to say, ‘Hey, how does this really work?’ and we noticed that they had limited options. So, we thought, we want to do something back for the community as cargo specifically,” de Bruijn shared. “It’s a combination of market cost, capacity available, and that’s how we came up with the 50 percent discount and that we will give all the students.” https://lnkd.in/efyC5Ujh #AirCargo #AirFreight #SupplyChain #Logistics #AirCargoWeek #ACW #Cargonews #CampusAir #WestJetCargo #StudentShipping #CanadianUniversities #EducationLogistics
