Working alongside communities in Afghanistan to find long-lasting solutions & providing life-saving support in crises.

About us

Afghanaid is a British humanitarian and development organisation. For 40 years, our dedicated staff have worked with millions of vulnerable families in some of the underserved and most remote communities in Afghanistan. We build basic services, improve livelihoods, strengthen the rights of women and children, help communities protect against natural disasters, and respond to humanitarian emergencies. Our community-led approach gives ordinary Afghans a voice in their own development, making them active participants in shaping the future of their country. With our years of experience, our majority Afghan team, and our deep understanding of local, cultural and ethnic issues, we have earned great trust and respect among the communities we serve. This has allowed us to gain access to some of the most hard to reach areas of the country. Our Vision: A peaceful and thriving Afghanistan. Our Mission: To provide Afghans with the training and tools they need to help themselves, their families and their communities. Our Focus: We particularly target vulnerable households – including those headed by women, or with elderly, chronically ill or disabled family members. Afghanaid employs around 700 staff, over 95% of whom are Afghan and more than a third of whom are women. We are headquartered in Kabul with provincial offices in our programme areas. We also have a small fundraising and donor liaison office in London.

✨ Over the course of 2023, our teams were able to reach over 1.5 million Afghan men, women, girls and boys with lifesaving and life-changing assistance. Whether delivering climate adaptation projects or ensuring vulnerable families can stay warm over the winter, none of the projects we have delivered over the past 12 months would have been possible without the generosity of amazing people like you. 💚 🔗Read more about YOUR tremendous impact: https://bit.ly/3TWFIdf

Ozra, a resilient farmer, knows well that an oversupply of fresh fruits and vegetables in local markets can push selling prices down. 🍅🥕🍇🍎 To tackle this, she had always dried some of her produce to sell at a later date, but it was very time consuming, and without the necessary equipment, led to dust, insects, and extreme heat spoiling the produce. 💪🏽 To support her to earn more money from her fruit and vegetable yields, Afghanaid equipped Ozra with a solar dryer, enabling her to efficiently dry her produce to add value and ensure she has a more steady income stream. Ozra told us proudly about the impact this support has had: "The solar dryers will save our fruits and vegetables from dust, rain, and dew during the drying process. We will be able to earn more from selling our dried agricultural products in the coming year." 💚 🔗Learn more about the innovative ways we boost agricultural livelihoods: https://bit.ly/3WgYxsr

The climate crisis creates issues across the globe. 🌏️ However, it also exacerbates existing issues and inequalities in society, meaning that populations already facing extreme challenges are most at risk. Communities in #Afghanistan continue to grapple with the challenges created by four decades of conflict, acute poverty and restrictions on women and girls. Climate change is multiplying these problems. 🔗Learn more: https://bit.ly/3y0PRgE

Last October, when a series of devastating earthquakes struck Herat province, families who were already facing significant challenges were left without a safe place to call home, or the means to afford food and other basic necessities. Thanks to the generous and rapid support of our community, we were able to deliver an emergency cash assistance programme to people like Aina, who told us how this assistance supported her to look after her family recover, and rebuild: "I used the donated money to treat my children, we went to the doctor when we got sick, we bought fuel such as firewood, and we used our own food and expenses... I am a strong woman, and with this cash I hope I can rebuild the future of my children." 💚 🔗Read more about the impact of your support: https://bit.ly/3VGbP1V

OK. Final chapter of 'Be The Light' film spam... 🎬 The final element of our film about climate resilience in Afghanistan is about PEOPLE ✊ Afghans have a strong sense of community, and by tapping into that, they stand the best chance of living up to the challenges of a changing climate. I love the Rumi quote we used for this section: 'If everything around you seems dark, look again, you may be the light.' It perfectly captures the community led approach Afghanaid adopt in their climate resilience programmes, as well as being a perfect call to action for supporters of this campaign. All credit to Kate Arthur (and Rumi) for crafting this brilliant messaging. This chapter also includes the most high-octane moment of my filmmaking career to date- high speed filming from the open boot of a car to capture the motorbiking veterinarian on his rounds 😅 I'm interested to hear other people's scariest #Filmmaking moments? I'll leave a link to the donation page in the comments.
