We're excited to announce that Aed Energy has been selected among twenty projects aiming to advance reliable, cost-effective renewable energy-based alternatives to fossil-fueled generators in the Philippines and Nigeria, as part of the first phase of the Zero Emission Generators (ZE-Gen) Technology Accelerator. ZE-Gen is a collaborative initiative led by The Carbon Trust and Innovate UK, with support from the IKEA Foundation and UK aid through the UK Government’s Ayrton Fund. Launched at COP27 with an initial commitment of over £19 million and an ambition to scale to £100 million, ZE-Gen is designed to tackle barriers, accelerate innovation and fund activities to build a thriving, competitive market for renewable alternatives to fossil-fuelled generators. Of the estimated 25 million fossil-fueled generators used worldwide, three million are in Nigeria and one million in the Philippines, costing billions annually in expensive fossil fuel consumption. In Nigeria alone, daily diesel consumption averages 14 million litres due to unreliable on-grid power, with Nigerians spending over N1 trillion (2.2 billion USD) in Q2 2023 alone, according to the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Agency (NMDPRA). Despite their critical function, the unsubsidised cost of electricity from diesel generators can exceed $400 per megawatt hour (MWh), placing significant economic strain on dependent regions. Our project aims to demonstrate a low-cost, clean, and reliable alternative: modular energy storage technology paired with intermittent renewable energy in a deployable configuration. At commercial scale, Aed Energy’s transformative solid-state engine delivers up to 100 hours of stored energy using very low-cost, abundant materials, with the ultimate goal of achieving an affordable roundtrip levelised cost of electricity (LCOE) under $100 per MWh. We’re looking forward to working with our partners in Nigeria and advancing our mission to accelerate access to affordable, clean energy worldwide. @Zero Emission Generators @Ayrton Fund @Transforming Energy Access @IKEA Foundation @The Carbon Trust @Innovate UK

What innovative startup would you create if energy costs were nearly free? 🌞 The rapid expansion of solar energy is reshaping industries globally with no signs of slowing down. Forecasts consistently underestimate its potential. Don't believe solar energy works at night? As The Economist states battery prices have plummeted by 90%, and there are emerging long-lasting energy solutions such as Aed Energy in our portfolio. Unlike traditional energy sources reliant on finite resources like oil, solar power leverages abundant materials like silicon-rich sand and human creativity for solar cell production. So, at some point this century founders will think about businesses based on nearly free energy. #SolarEnergy #RenewableFuture #CleanTech #climatetech #startups 💡🔋🌍

As detailed in the The Financial Times, the G7 countries are setting ambitious goals to increase global electricity storage capacity by 6.5x, aiming to reach 1,500 GW by 2030. This monumental increase, up from 230 GW in 2022, underscores the critical role of energy storage in integrating renewable sources like solar and wind into our energy grids. #EnergyStorage #RenewableEnergy #G7Summit #Sustainability #Innovation https://lnkd.in/gCe9PqRU

🎉 Aed Energy closes pre-seed funding to build MWh-scale thermal battery 🚀 We are thrilled to announce that we've just closed our pre-seed funding round     marking a significant milestone in our mission to accelerate access to affordable, clean energy worldwide. This investment takes us a step closer to launching our first MWh-scale thermal battery delivering low cost, long-duration storage dispatchable as electricity and heat.    A big thank you to the deeply collaborative investors that made up the round - led by Zero Carbon Capital Pippa Gawley Alex Gawley with substantial participation from Dhyan Ventures Amar Shah, Duncan Grierson, & Stephen Murdoch. With their support, we’re well on track to bring transformative energy storage to market. We are also especially grateful to our partners at Carbon13 for the spark⚡that launched our company, to Cranfield University for their startup R&D grant support, and to the Greenhouse Programme by Undaunted: Tackling climate change with innovation for the practical, no-nonsense accelerator guidance levelling up our game. Reach out for info and collaboration… We’re just getting started! #CarbonFree #CleanEnergy #EnergyStorage #Innovation #SustainableDevelopment #DiversityInTech #AedEnergy #RenewableEnergy

🔥 Heat wave: ZCC invests in Aed Energy 💸 We are thrilled to announce our #investment in Aed Energy, a long-duration energy storage (#LDES) company combining cost-effective thermal storage with state-of-the-art #photovoltaics to build super-cheap, modular electricity storage. 🔋 For intermittent #RenewableEnergy to deliver the majority of our electricity needs we will require the addition of significant long-duration storage to our electricity system. Some of that storage will be added at the grid level, some will sit in front of renewable generation, some will sit with end-users and some will support the operation of micro-grids. #Microgrids are sites that are not connected to the grid but have a need for electricity - sometimes industrial sites in remote locations, sometimes like hospitals because they wish to be self-sufficient from flaky national infrastructure and sometimes just because there is no grid! There are a huge number of micro-grids today - the market for microgrids in 2023 was over $30bn. We believe there will be many more as we see industrial growth in developing countries and the 700m people living without electricity today come online. ⚡️ Aed Energy’s low cost, modular solution, when paired with solar or wind generation, is an ideal candidate to enable these many micro-grids to access consistent, cheap 24/7 electricity. Because not all of the heat energy from Aed Energy’s battery can be turned into electricity, these sites get access to high-temperature heat energy too, useful for industrial heat or district heating. A two-for-one deal! We think there are lots of opportunities in this long-duration energy storage space, both for heat and electricity across sites with highly variable characteristics, and we are super excited to take our first step into it with Rayan, Oliver and Michael.
