Intersex Awareness Day is honored October 26th, commemorating the first documented public demonstration by the intersex community in the United States, which took place in Boston in 1996. It is now celebrated every year to advocate for the human rights of intersex individuals and bring awareness to the community. “Intersex” is an umbrella term that covers a wide range of differences in sex traits, such as differences in “genitalia, hormones, internal anatomy, or chromosomes” (InterACT). Intersex individuals are often subjected to “attempts to prevent or ‘cure’ intersex differences” (InterACT). As reported by the United Nations Human Rights Office, “intersex children are subjected to repeated surgery and treatment to try to change their sex characteristics and appearance, causing terrible physical, psychological, and emotional pain – and violating their rights.” Intersex Awareness Day serves to raise awareness of these issues in the intersex community and to advocate for intersex individuals’ rights. At Adelphi Values, we aim to incorporate inclusivity and equity into every aspect of our organization. This includes recognizing and bringing awareness to the ongoing fights for justice in marginalized communities. We welcome you to join us in recognizing Intersex Awareness Day by learning more about the intersex community and how you can be an advocate. Please see the list below for further reading. Celebrated every year during the last full week of October, Ace Week celebrates asexual-spectrum identities and advocates for increased acceptance of the asexual community. Individuals on the asexual spectrum often face marginalization from various aspects of society, and in the realm of healthcare, research has demonstrated additional challenges and vulnerabilities faced by asexual individuals. A study published by Flanagan and Peters (2020) found that asexual individuals often do not feel comfortable disclosing their sexual identity to healthcare providers, and when they do, they run the risk of experiencing misunderstanding and pathologization. Research has also documented minority stress and associated mental health impacts in the asexual community, as with a large cross-sectional study conducted by Lech et al. (2024) showing that asexual-identified individuals had a significantly higher prevalence of depressive symptoms than other participants. Ace Week is a time to push for greater acceptance, understanding, and education around asexual-spectrum identities and communities. At Adelphi Values, we strive to incorporate diversity and inclusivity into all aspects of our work and research. We encourage readers to celebrate and learn more by checking out the resources below! #AceWeek Sources and further reading: - The Ace and Aro Advocacy Project. (2022). “Aro and Ace Healthcare”. Recognized every year on the 3rd Wednesday of October, International Pronouns Day “seeks to make respecting, sharing, and educating about personal pronouns commonplace” (Pronouns.org). Pronouns are used by others to refer to who we are as individuals, and often have gendered connotations. Using someone’s correct personal pronouns is a foundational aspect of treating people with dignity and respect. As an organization dedicated to understanding and uplifting the patient perspective, Adelphi Values believes that recognizing and respecting personal pronouns is a fundamental step in treating others with dignity and promoting belonging and justice. This starts by engaging with individuals with kindness and respect. To this end, members of Adelphi Values’ Diversity, Equity, Inclusivity and Belonging (DEI-B) working group have spearheaded various initiatives promoting respect for others’ gender identity and personal pronouns, including sharing pronouns internally and updating the documents we use to collect patient demographic data so that they contain inclusive and representative options for patients to mark their gender identity. Please join us today in recognizing International Pronouns Day. For sources and further reading, please see the list below. #PronounsDay Sources and further reading: -Human Rights Campaign.
