Navigating Challenges and Opportunities in the near-term
Maritime stakeholders find ourselves at a crucial juncture, with a complex mix of economic, environmental, and geopolitical factors which will inter-play to shape the near-term fortunes for the industry.
Shipping markets appear poised for moderate growth, remaining moderately above long-term averages. However, we could be witnessing a gradual decoupling of seaborne trade volumes from global economic growth – a trend that will shape shipping in the coming decades.
Global seaborne trade may grow by 2.4% in 2024, to ~12.5 billion tonnes, but we are seeing shifting trade patterns, geopolitical tensions and evolving economic landscapes. The continuing attacks from Houthi rebels are causing rerouting of vessels away from the Suez Canal, adding to tonne-miles equation bit also to fuel consumption and emissions. China's expected slowdown to ~4.5% growth will significantly impact commodity demand and shipping volumes.
1. Tankers: Crude tonne-miles are being flattered by mass re-routings and products expected to grow by 7%, driven by increased long-haul shipments from the Middle East to Europe.
2. Dry Bulk: Faces a mixed outlook, especially with some long-term challenges loom, particularly for iron ore and coal trades.
3. Containers: After the windfall of recent years, this sector faces overcapacity issues with ~25% fleet gains over the next four years, cooling off box rates and secondhand prices.
4. Gas Carriers: Mixed fortunes here with LNG seeing near-term heavy influx of new deliveries, meanwhile LPG demand expected to grow by 5.7% in 2024.
The global fleet growth has cooled off, with total fleet ~109,710 vessels or ~1,6 b GT, growing ~1.7% YTD and an orderbook of ~14% of current fleet size. Noteworthy, that ~50% the current orderbook is alternative fuel capable. This gives confidence on maritime decarbonization and players moving in response to EU ETS, IMO's EEXI, CII and other regulations shaping fleet renewals and operational strategies.

- Potential overcapacity in sectors such as containers.
- Operationalising environmental regulations and the associated costs.
- Geopolitical tensions on trade routes and market volatility.
- Balancing fleet renewal with uncertain demand in some segments.
It feels we as the maritime industry stand at a crossroads. While our short-term outlook remains cautiously optimistic, our long-term success will depend on our ability to adapt to changing trade patterns, stringent environmental regulations, and evolving market demands.
Winners are likely to be those investing in sustainable technologies, optimizing operations, and remaining agile in the face of geopolitical and economic shifts. Collaboration across the industry, will become increasingly crucial in addressing these challenges and seizing the opportunities that lie ahead.
