We're proud to share The Honourable Society of the Inner Temple’s feature on Shyam Thakerar in celebration of South Asian Heritage Month.   Shyam's story, shaped by his family's experience, and his own journey to becoming a commercial and international arbitration barrister, highlights the strength that can be found in embracing one's heritage.    Shyam demonstrates further commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion at the Bar as Head of the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion committee at The 36 Group, and we are proud to share in his mission to foster positive change in our profession.

We're delighted to feature Shyam Thakerar as our final profile celebrating South Asian Heritage Month 🪷🪔🥻 Shyam is a commercial, employment and international arbitration barrister at 36 Stone, part of the 36 Group Chambers. As a scholar of The Inner Temple, Shyam was called to the Bar in 2016. Shyam recently returned from working in the DIFC in Dubai as part of the Inns of Court’s Pegasus Scholarship scheme.    “My parents came to the United Kingdom following the expulsion of all Asians from Uganda by the dictator, Idi Amin. They arrived with virtually nothing after being forced to leave their home within 90 days, along with thousands of others. Some 40,000 immigrants settled in the UK and their stories of grit and determination in the face of immense adversity fills me with great pride in being part of an immigrant community.    Growing up in the UK, and with my parents’ focus on my education, my siblings and I were blessed to have every avenue available to us. I read History at St John’s College, University of Oxford where I was President of the Oxford Hindu Society and have always sought to embrace my background and to practise my faith.    My decision to become a barrister was not one that was immediately obvious. As someone who is relatively shy and does not often seek the limelight, being at the centre of things in the courtroom was not the most natural choice. However, following mini-pupillages and seeing the way that barristers could grip a judge or jury, or control a witness, I knew this was the opportunity for me to challenge myself by stepping out of my comfort zone on a daily basis.    My heritage and upbringing, with my varying cultural identities, is a source of great strength. It has enabled me to empathise and engage with clients and solicitors from varying backgrounds, particularly in my international work.    I am proud to see increased diversity within the Bar and the judiciary. As recent events have shown us though, there is still much to be done in unpicking and unlearning racial bias in all walks of society, including our industry. I hope to play my small part in assisting diversity at the Bar as Head of the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion committee in chambers.” #SAHM #SouthAsianHeritageMonth 36 Stone The 36 Group

Congratulations to Andrew Ng (黄悦德) for being admitted to the Singapore Bar. Andrew is now one of the very small group of barristers at the UK Bar that are also dual qualified in Singapore. This also marks the third jurisdiction in which he is admitted to practice law.    A ‘Rising Star’ in the Legal 500 2024 directories, Andrew has experience in a broad range of commercial disputes, with an increasing proportion of his practice involving civil fraud, offshore disputes, international commercial arbitration and international trade.   Read more about his practice here: https://lnkd.in/eidDEqmR

    Barrister at 36 Stone

I am delighted and honoured to have been admitted to the Singapore Bar earlier this morning. This marks the third jurisdiction where I am admitted to practise law, and it is particularly meaningful in light of how things have, in time, come full circle. A special thank you goes to KC Lye, my long-time friend and mentor, for offering to move my call, and to those who have supported me through the years in making today possible.

Dr Satya T. presented her topic "The Polar and the death of the "insurance code" analysis?" at the Young Maritime Lawyers Conference in Rotterdam last week.   The Conference was attended by young maritime lawyers from the UK, France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and the CMI, who presented on maritime topics relevant to their jurisdiction on the Friday. Speakers received questions from a panel of Dutch maritime lawyers. On "Salvage Saturday", delegates attended the Maritiem Museum Rotterdam for talks on salving wrecks and wreck removal in shipping.   Many thanks to the Dutch organising committee for such a fantastic event.
