No spell required: Schmidt Science Fellows Anthony Waddle is conjuring warmth to beat back a deadly toad curse. Specially designed shelters could help endangered frogs survive the devastating impacts of a deadly disease by regulating their body temperature to fight off infections. Researchers at Macquarie University, led by Dr. Waddle have developed a “mini-med spa” for amphibians, using heat as a simple and effective way to help endangered frogs survive a devastating pandemic impacting multiple species. The research, published in the journal Nature, offers a potential lifeline for fast-declining populations like the green and golden bell frog (Litoria aurea), which has disappeared from more than 90 per cent of its former native range in Australia. “In these simple little hotspots, frogs can go and heat up their bodies to a temperature that destroys the infections,” said Dr. Waddle. Yesterday at #THEwas in Manchester, our Executive Director Dr. Megan Kenna and Times Higher Education Principal Data Scientist Billy Wong shared early insights from the inaugural Interdisciplinary Science Ranking by Times Higher Education. A packed room heard a discussion of what Times Higher Education describes as their most successful new ranking launch ever, with 749 universities from 92 countries participating! Key insights include: High enthusiasm for interdisciplinary science, particularly strong in emerging research regions like Asia and Africa, with the US also performing strongly. The data highlights the importance of research management and culture in turning investment into high-impact interdisciplinary outcomes. As one key insight noted: “Building facilities to support interdisciplinary science is easy, but fostering the right culture is much harder.” Asian universities lead with the highest proportion of interdisciplinary publications, while North America and Europe maintain strong research quality, though with a smaller share of interdisciplinary outputs.
