About us
The Makerere University Walter Reed Project (MUWRP) is a non-profit partnership between Makerere University and MHRP. MHRP has been conducting HIV research in Uganda since 1998 and expanded its portfolio to include prevention, care and treatment activities in 2005 under the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). More recently, MUWRP expanded its portfolio to research into other communicable diseases of public health importance in Uganda.¨By building infrastructure and increasing the capacity of local public and private partners, MUWRP ensures quality services for communities participating in vaccine research and HIV cohort studies.

With deepest appreciation, Makerere University Walter Reed Project bid farewell to Dr. Vamsi Vasireddy on 8 July 2024. Dr. Vamsi Vasireddy has been the Country Director-Uganda, Walter Reed Army Institute of Research-Africa, United States Department of Defense, since December 2021. He is leaving Uganda to take up other engagements with the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. #MUWRP is very grateful to Dr. Vamsi Vasireddy for his outstanding leadership, dedication, and exemplary service, which have significantly impacted the organization. Makerere University Walter Reed Project hosted the quarterly meeting for the Community Advisory Board (CAB), at its offices in Nakasero, Kampala on 5th July 2024. In the meeting, #MUWRP updated the CAB on ongoing and upcoming research studies at #MUWRP’s Clinical Research site in Nakasero. The studies include #RV583MOCHIHIVCohortStudy, #Sabin002MarburgVaccineTrial, #RV591HIVRapidVaxVaccineTrial, #Sabin003EbolaVaccineTrial, and #RV419/HOPEHIVCureResearch work. The CAB consists of representatives from different constituencies in communities where #MUWRP conducts research. These include former study participants, religious leaders, civil society organizations, people living with HIV, key populations, performing artists, and adolescent girls and young women.

June 19-21, 2024: Makerere University Walter Reed Project hosted the inaugural #DELIVERWorkshop in Kampala. The workshop was attended by participants from institutions in Brazil, Nigeria, Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, Thailand, the Philippines, and Uganda. At the workshop, the institutions in attendance showcased their capabilities in #HIVCureResearch and reflected on what is required to conduct #HIVCureTrials as part of the efforts towards an #HIVCure. Makerere University Walter Reed Project was honored to host the inaugural Developing Leadership and Innovation for Viral Eradication Research (DELIVER) HIV Remission Workshop in Kampala between 19-21 June 2024. The workshop brought together researchers from Africa, South America, North America and Asia to discuss #HIVCureResearch. The #DELIVER initiative aims at facilitating stakeholder and community engagement, build clinical site capacity, and coordinate technology transfer, training, and validation of specific laboratory assays for HIV remission research. Professor Lish Ndhlovu, together with Associate Professor Michael Corley and Dr. Alina Pang, were hosted by Makerere University Walter Reed Project on June 10, 2024. Lish Ndhlovu, a professor of Immunology at #WeillCornellMedicine's Division of Infectious Diseases, is a Principal Investigator of the HOPE Collaboratory, a consortium of researchers from the US, Brazil, and Africa focused on #HIVCureResearch. He is working with MUWRP's Laboratory Director, Dr. Prossy Naluyima, to install and set up the 10x Genomics sequencer, which utilizes microfluidics and next generation sequencing to do single cell genomic analysis in the laboratory. Makerere University Walter Reed Project (MUWRP) hosted Prof @Julian Ma from #St. George's University of London, UK. The discussion focused on potential collaboration with MUWRP in areas of #CapacityBuilding and #ClinicalTrials. On the first day of his visit (June 4, 2024), Prof. Ma visited MUWRP's head offices and the Clinical Research laboratory in Kampala, interacting with MUWRP’s leadership and touring the premises. He also toured #MUWRP-#PEPFAR supported laboratories at #KayungaRegionalReferralHospital and #MukonoGeneralHospital on June 7th, 2024, accompanied by Dr. Grace Mirembe, MUWRP’s Research Manager.
