Police Patrol and Law Enforcement

Sworn officers proactively patrol all campus properties and adjacent streets 24-hours a day to detect and prevent crimes; enforce laws and regulations; protect life and property; preserve order; detect and apprehend violators of state and local criminal and traffic laws; identify violators of University regulations; prepare police reports and related documentation; testify in court and disciplinary hearings; and assist the public.

Police and Public Safety Communications

Communications officers staff a 24-hour police and emergency public safety communications center (CommCenter) to serve the University community. Staff receive incoming calls for assistance; dispatch police officers and other emergency (fire and medical) services; monitor intrusion, fire and energy management alarms and closed-circuit television surveillance systems; prioritize requests for assistance; maintain the status of police officers in the field; operate criminal justice computer systems and provide officers with critical criminal offender and other record information; process and manage police reports and related files, distribute police reports to departments and the public, and maintain computerized dispatch and activity logs.

Criminal Investigations

Criminal investigators and police officers conduct criminal investigations to identify and apprehend perpetrators not apprehended at the time of an initial crime report, analyze crimes deemed solvable for planning of investigative resources, gather and maintain evidence, prepare cases for court, provide liaison to local and county prosecutors, obtain arrest and search warrants, and refer appropriate cases through the university judicial process.

Crime Prevention

Sworn officers and support staff provide an emphasis within the university community on proactive, rather than reactive, means to prevent crime through the delivery of a variety of crime prevention and awareness programs and resources.

Facility Security

Sworn officers provide security checks of more than 40 major buildings over 300 acres. Officers provide access to buildings upon request (pursuant to access policies) and secure perimeter access doors at the end of each academic day. Officers notify the CommCenter when security violations are discovered and security notices are forwarded to building administrators.

Traffic and Parking Enforcement and Control

UCAPD provides control and enforcement of the University street and parking system which includes over 7,000 parking spaces and several miles of surface streets. Sworn officers, as well as parking services representatives, provide for the sales and financial reconciliation of parking permits; enforce traffic and parking laws and regulations; assist stranded motorists; reserve and regulate parking spaces; and develop and distribute an annual traffic and parking regulations brochure.

Special Event Security

Sworn officers provide for effective crowd and traffic control; deter acts of violence or disobedience; and maintain a safe and enjoyable environment for large scale university events including football, basketball, and other athletic contests, dances and social gatherings, conferences and camps, and other special events held on University property.

UCAPD ensures that its officers and staff are able to meet current and long-range goals and objectives by maintaining the level of skill, knowledge, and abilities necessary to discharge their public safety duties professionally and sensitively within a diverse academic community through the delivery of basic, in-service and specialized training opportunities.
