“The greatest joy in my academic life is to see the expression on a student’s face when she discovers just how good she is and when these students flourish in sites all over the world, in professional school, graduate school, business, in all walks of life. And to know that the sun never sets on Honors College alumni working all over the world for the common good.”

— Norbert O. Schedler

Dr. Norbert “Norb” Oscar Schedler, founder of the UCA Honors College, left this life peacefully on the morning of Sunday, May 26, 2019. He had suffered from Parkinson’s disease and multiple myeloma for many years, but his loss will continue to ripple throughout the Honors College family for years to come.

In 1981, Norb and then UCA President Jefferson Farris, Jr., started the Honors College to serve the “severely gifted” students of Arkansas. In 2013, the Honors College was dedicated in Norb’s name and will forever be known as the Norbert O. Schedler Honors College.

Now in our fourth decade, we remain focused on Norb’s intention of the college, developing citizen-scholars capable of authoring their own lives and leading social change. We expect our students to author a life that makes a difference in the world and dedicate themselves to developing sound judgment in service of the common good.

The Honors College Chapter of the UCA Alumni Association has set a goal to raise $25,000 to endow a scholarship in Norb’s memory. This scholarship would benefit students like the ones Norb often took chances on when he saw potential that others did not.

We invite all alumni and friends of the Schedler Honors College to donate a gift of any amount in honor of Dr. Schedler’s life and legacy to the Norbert O. Schedler Memorial Scholarship.
