HIAS strongly condemns the attacks by the Russian army on civilian infrastructure, mainly targeting educational and healthcare facilities. During the latest massive shelling of Ukrainian cities, one of the missiles struck the premises of Europe’s largest children's hospital, Okhmatdyt. The missile hit the Department of Intensive and Apheresis Therapy for Chronic Intoxications at the National Specialized Children's Hospital, damaging five buildings. Ten people were injured, six of them children. One of the hospital buildings collapsed, and rescue operations to free those trapped under the rubble lasted over a day. Currently, the hospital continues to operate normally. As a result of the massive attack, there are known to be 127 injured and 27 dead in Kyiv alone. The numbers covering the entire country are significantly higher. The Russian army's attack caused substantial damage to Ukraine’s energy facilities, civilian infrastructure, and housing. According to border guards, this tragedy has led to a new wave of refugees, with hundreds of people forced to seek shelter. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, nearly 600 children have been killed and almost 1,500 injured in Ukraine due to the hostilities. These numbers continue to rise. Despite all the risks, HIAS Ukraine staff continue to support those affected by this war. HIAS Ukraine is committed to equality for all social groups. Our organization advocates for the rights of vulnerable communities in Ukraine. Recently, we joined the United Nations thematic dialogue with colleagues from UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, UN Women UK, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and Ukrainian LGBTIQ communities to discuss current challenges and barriers for LGBTIQ people with local LGBTIQ organizations.   The results and recommendations of these discussions will be presented at the UNCT meeting in Ukraine. Recommendations include the following:  - Provide an inclusive and safe platform for local and national LGBTIQ organizations to highlight emerging and timely human rights, humanitarian, and recovery priorities. - Ensure the strengthening of LGBTIQ communities' voices and participation in the development and implementation of national policies and programs, as well as humanitarian response strategies. - Enable direct interaction of LGBTIQ people with the development and humanitarian communities and promote partnerships. - Promote solidarity between movements and facilitate dialogue on strategies to achieve equality, freedom, and justice for all.  Research from four years ago showed that only 28% of Ukrainians expressed a positive attitude towards representatives of these communities. Today, this figure has increased to 73%. However, the problem is still exacerbated by the full-scale invasion. War can lead to exclusion from traditional support networks in displaced and host communities. Such exclusion can be particularly severe for transgender people. 📢 International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict 📢 Today, June 19th, we observe the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict. This day serves as an important opportunity to highlight the grim reality faced by thousands of people during armed conflicts worldwide. In Ukraine, nearly 300 victims of sexual violence in conflict have been officially registered. This number is only a fraction of the true scale, as many victims are afraid to seek help due to fear of persecution or social stigma. Sexual violence in conflict is used as a weapon, destroying lives and communities and leaving indelible scars. Women, men, and children fall victim to this brutality, which causes irreparable physical and psychological harm. We must unite in the fight for justice and support for those who have experienced sexual violence in conflict. HIAS Ukraine joined the discussion with representatives of the Council of Europe Office and Ombudsman's Office within the EU project "Supporting the implementation of European standards on combating discrimination and national minority rights in Ukraine." Halvard Gorseth, Head of the Anti-Discrimination Department of the Council of Europe Office, also attended the event. Participants discussed global support for implementing the Act on the Institute of Registered Partnerships and the draft Act on Amendments to the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offences and the Criminal Code of Ukraine on Combating Discrimination. In particular, closer, fruitful cooperation and communication between local and international NGOs and representatives of the Ombudsperson's Office were established. _____________________________________ HIAS Ukraine долучилися до дискусії НУО з представниками та представницями офісу Омбудсмена в рамках проєкту ЄС та Ради Європи «Підтримка впровадження європейських стандартів щодо боротьби з дискримінацією та правами національних меншин в Україні». Humanitarian response in the context of Ukraine, leadership of women-led organizations and their needs, comprehensive support for war-affected civilians, and its components. Anastasia Chebotaryova, Advocacy and Communication Coordinator at HIAS Ukraine, discussed this in a live broadcast of the Hromadske Radio project "On the Pulse." Anastasiia noted that the Ukrainian humanitarian response is unprecedented and requires the development of new innovative ways to overcome the consequences of the war for civilians. Many existing challenges have fallen on the shoulders of women-led organizations, and HIAS Ukraine supports them to address most current barriers. How can women-led organizations leaders prepare for international events? Hanna Rozhkova and Iraida Gerashchenko shared their experience of participation at high-level panel events during the 68th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women and met with high-level officials from UN Women, USAID and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in New York, as well as Congressmen in Washington, D.C. with the support of HIAS. International events are an opportunity to advocate for the necessary changes to protect the rights of vulnerable groups, including increased international attention and reallocation of funding. _________________________ Як лідеркам жіночих організацій підготуватись до міжнародних заходів?
