The "Strengthening Urban Resilience in Ukraine" project funded by Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by GIZ Ukraine, has successfully developed a geoinformation system to assess and document damage to buildings in Chernihiv and 17 nearby settlements. In collaboration with #UADAMAGE, the project utilized satellite and drone imagery, alongside AI-powered analysis, to evaluate damage across 1,500 square kilometers—an area three times the size of Warsaw. This advanced technology enables precise damage assessments, helping city officials prioritize and plan reconstruction efforts. The data, integrated with urban planning information from the Chernihiv City Council, is accessible via an online platform, though access remains restricted during martial law. “Digitalizing damage assessment allows for rapid data analysis and more efficient infrastructure restoration planning," says Oleksandr Atroshchenko, Deputy Mayor of Chernihiv. UADAMAGE's innovative approach, using AI, scales damage assessments and ensures flexibility in response to evolving needs. The integration of damage data with urban planning tools is aiding Chernihiv’s ongoing city development, ensuring that recovery efforts are both strategic and effective. #GIZ

GIZ Ukraine works! Today marks the first day of school for Ukrainian children after the summer holidays, and GIZ Ukraine is making a significant impact on behalf of the German government. In 2023, GIZ rebuilt 12 schools across Ukraine, enabling around 5,000 students to continue their education despite the ongoing full-scale invasion. In the northern municipality of Ripky, a digital hub has been established in the basement of a secondary school, offering a safe and connected learning space for students and teachers alike. This initiative, along with community-driven efforts to rebuild schools with minimal resources, allows families to stay in or return to their communities. Through these actions, Germany continues to support Ukraine and contribute to the stability of the European neighborhood. 1200 skilled workers for Ukraine's recovery: results of a year of cooperation between Skills4Recovery, the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine. “Skilled workers are the key to economic stability. We focus on modernizing vocational education by providing modern equipment, training managers and teachers, and supporting vulnerable groups such as women, veterans, and internally displaced persons. #Skills4Recovery also assists our partners in repositioning vocational education institutions and developing strategies for veterans' transition back to civilian life,” said Michael Paulo, Programme Director of Skills4Recovery, GIZ Ukraine. Over the year of its operation, the Skills4Recovery programme has strengthened more than 20 vocational education providers in 11 regions of Ukraine. 230 teachers received management and digitalization skills. Almost 1200 people have successfully completed retraining courses. The programme has purchased nearly 1,500 pieces of modern equipment to vocational education institutions: agrodrones, 3D printers, Starlink satellite modems, special simulators, interactive panels, various tools and machines for various purposes. The next steps are to scale up the results and implement new initiatives. The #Skills4Recovery programme aims to support the training and retraining of skilled labour in four economic sectors important to the recovery process: construction, transport and logistics, agriculture and services. Funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the programme runs from mid-2023 to mid-2026 and covers Lviv, Vinnytsia, Chernivtsi, Kyiv, Poltava and Dnipro regions. Small change, big benefit: Call centers are now replacing the old registration areas in Ukrainian healthcare facilities. They inform patients about appointments or practice opening hours, for example. This reduces the workload for staff and people get the information they need quickly. We are currently modernizing 12 facilities, including the health center in the municipality of Nizhyn in the Chernihiv region. We are coooperating with the patient network CO "100% LIFE".
