In recent years, seaweed, also known as Mwani in Swahili, has experienced a significant surge in popularity on Mafia Island, particularly in Chole Village, where there are now 113 seaweed farmers. Despite the potential of seaweed cultivation to support the livelihoods of thousands of coastal communities, it is worth noting that seaweed is the 3rd highest export commodity in Zanzibar. However, women seaweed farmers in particular face numerous challenges that not only impede their potential but also exacerbate their vulnerability to poverty. I am honored to be part of ActionAid Tanzania as we embark on a journey to unlock the potential of women seaweed farmers by addressing the challenges they encounter. Grounded in our impactful programming approach that addresses the structural root causes of issues, I firmly believe that through close collaboration with women farmers, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), government entities, and donors, we can develop sustainable solutions to the challenges faced by women seaweed smallholder farmers and facilitate their economic empowerment. Together, we can make a tangible difference in the lives of these women and their communities.
