The London Aquatics Centre, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, is famous for its fluid and dynamic architectural form, inspired by the fluidity of water itself. Located in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, the building was initially constructed for the 2012 Summer Olympics. Its unique roof design swoops dramatically over the pools, resembling a wave or water droplet, with its undulating curves and sleek, futuristic appearance. The design emphasizes transparency and openness, with extensive use of glass to create a light-filled interior that blurs the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces. It consists of a steel wire net supporting a textile membrane, creating a dynamic and light-filled canopy that covers the stadium. This roof structure is supported by freestanding steel columns and inclined tie rods, allowing for an expansive and unobstructed interior space. 🎙 I had a great conversation with Patrik Schumacher, the principal architect of Zaha Hadid Architects in their London office as we discussed his approach to parametricism, parametric design, computational tools, artificial intelligence, education, and the future of architecture. Watch now: https://lnkd.in/d7Gi7YYr 🖋 Schumacher studied Philosophy and Mathematics at the Friedrich Wilhelm University in Bonn and continued his education in architecture at the University of Stuttgart and London Southbank University. He joined ZHA in the late 90s and first worked on Vitra Firestation with Zaha Hadid. Also, as someone interested in architectural theory, he started teaching in universities; Schumacher began a teaching career in 1993 at Kingston University. La Tulipe, designed by Jack Vicajee Bertoli, is a distinctive example of Swiss Brutalism located in Geneva. Completed in 1976, the building serves as the headquarters for the Swiss Medical Research Foundation. Its design is characterized by a unique fusion of Brutalist elements and vibrant colors, with pink, blue, and orange-tinted windows that give the facade a whimsical, cotton candy-like appearance. The structure’s nickname, “La Tulipe,” reflects its tulip-inspired form, where the vivid, colorful glass contrasts with the harsh, hulking concrete exterior. This juxtaposition creates a striking visual impact, making it seem more akin to architecture found in an ex-Soviet republic than in the heart of Geneva.
