meaning of some Polynesian island names
[edit source]Hi Hello Tauʻolunga, long time no write. Lately, I have been working on the articles de:Anuta and de:Fatutaka in the German Wikipedia. There I also came across island names such as Te Fatu and Fatuʻomanga. Can you recognize the meanings of these island names? I understand or believe:
- Fatu = rock
- Fatutaka = remote rock
- Te Fatu = The Rock?
- Fatuʻomanga = ??? rock
The latter two are tiny satellite islets of Anuta. Thank you, and greetings,--Ratzer (talk) 20:51, 8 Sune 2012 (UTC)
- fatu has many meanings in Tongan, but one of them (the last one in the dictionary) indeed is rock; cognate with vatu in Fiji, so probably the word is generally known in all western Polynesia. manga is branch in Tongan, but that does not say anything about Anutan. It might be a variant of maunga, mountain, as it is in Mangareva in the Gambier. Rock of the mountain ? --Tauʻolunga (talk) 05:25, 9 Sune 2012 (UTC)

[edit source]Hi Tauʻolunga! Can you to restore and translate this page? I need so much your help! Is a sample phrase. Thanks in advanced. Vitor Mazuco (talk) 10:51, 26 Sune 2012 (UTC)
- No. Even if it was restored, it would be soon deleted again for lack of content. I rather spend my time on making pages for Tongan singers. --Tauʻolunga (talk) 06:36, 27 Sune 2012 (UTC)
I assume you speak English. Do you remember where you found this image?--KAVEBEAR (talk) 07:39, 30 Siulai 2012 (UTC)

Thank You for the Wikipedia Picture
[edit source]Hello, My name is Duane Hurst and I recently made a free (non-commercial) English web site to share information with people. I added links to your Wikipedia/Wikimedia freeware picture (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Butaritari-causeway.jpg). I also gave credit to you on my web pages for your work. Thank you for sharing with the public. My website is:
http://www.freeenglishsite.com/
I also am a "Mormon" and my web site has a Mormon section that contains my Book of Mormon map (pictures of actual locations), my translation of Egyptian hieroglyphs from the Book of Abraham, and other items. I have shared and discussed these with various LDS general authorities and given many fireside presentations about them in Japan, Thailand and USA. My web site sections about the USA and World also have LDS membership and temple information for each country.
I add pictures such as yours to one of the following major sections of my site: 1. World section - contains information and over 10,000 images of every world country and territory. Link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/world/index.htm
2. USA section - contains information and images of every USA state and territory. Link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/world/usa/index.htm
3. English section - "Mel and Wes" lessons in conversation format. Stories are located in various USA states and world countries such as China, England, Germany, Japan, Mexico and Thailand. Each lesson has many slang terms and idioms, which I link to my Slang Dictionary. This eventually will have over 5,000 terms. Currently, it has about 3,000 slang and idioms. I regularly add new lessons and slang terms. Link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/english/lessons/index.htm Slang Dictionary link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/english/slang/Eslang_a.htm
Prior to retirement, I taught English at several private and public universities in the United States.
Please share this free site with your friends. I hope all will enjoy the pictures and find the English information useful. Sincerely, Duane Hurst in Utah, USA

Now Commons
[edit source]Hi Tauʻolunga,
in the list Special:ListFiles there are several free files. I tagged some with "cc-by-sa-2.5", see Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Cc-by-sa-2.5. I transferred them with to Commons with the tool https://tools.wmflabs.org/commonshelper/ . Could you delete the local versions? The local files to be deleted, because they are now in Commons, can be found at Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:NowCommons. 91.9.117.42 14:54, 15 Mē 2016 (UTC)
Local files
[edit source]At https://to.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:ListFiles?limit=500&user= - for some it says Google map and CC-BY-SA-2.5. I have never seen Google maps as CC-BY-SA. Can you show the source? Otherwise the files have to be deleted. 91.9.126.244 12:38, 15 Sune 2016 (UTC)
- Do what you think you have to do. --Tauʻolunga (talk) 05:47, 16 Sune 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Tauʻolunga, as a local admin it corresponds to you to decide if those files have to be deleted or not, but if you want you can leave this decision to GSs and stewards.--Syum90 (talk) 16:09, 16 Sune 2016 (UTC)

Hi again. Will you create more SVG like the ones from 2016-06-19 listed at c:Special:Contributions/Tauʻolunga? There are 282 local files in Tonga Wikipedia. All are maps. It would be great if they would be in Commons, so that other Wikipedias can use them too. 91.9.113.129 12:43, 22 Sune 2016 (UTC)
- It is a lot of work. I am not going to say no and never, but do not expect overnight results. By the way, what is wrong with gif files? --Tauʻolunga (talk) 05:27, 23 Sune 2016 (UTC)
- One could also transfer the gif files to Commons. But if you make SVG, then maybe it is not worth the work. But if no SVG is coming soon, then transferring gif is the way to provide access to the files to other Wikimedia projects. There is now https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:GIF_maps_of_Tonga_(green_scheme) .
- All files at Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Cc-by-sa-2.5 are duplicates of files in Commons. The local copy can be deleted. 91.9.112.221 12:18, 23 Sune 2016 (UTC)

Area and population
[edit source]Hi! I would like to ask you if you could tell me whether these two words are correctly translated into Tongan. I need them to improve the template for countries.
- Area - Feitu'u
- Population - Kakai
Thanks. --Katxis (talk) 09:14, 22 Fēpueli 2017 (UTC)
- No
- area (as in: area 5 km²?) - lahi (if used in context; otherwise more wordy: lahi ʻo e feituʻu)
- population (as in: population 5 million?) - tokolahi (if used in context; otherwise more wordy: tokolahi ʻo e kakai ʻo e fonua)
- In any case, personally I believe that writing something useful about a country should be done first before starting to worry about statistics --Tauʻolunga (talk) 05:55, 23 Fēpueli 2017 (UTC)
- It is to add the information to the template, as you can see in Holani. I don't speak the language so I can just help with technical issues. --Katxis (talk) 10:15, 23 Fēpueli 2017 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users
[edit source]Hi!
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Basse-Terre <=> Kelelalo
[edit source]Good afternoon, Tauʻolunga.
Is it correct to give a literal translation of a geographical name? For example, the capital of China, Beijing, literally translates as "Northern Capital", but nowhere is this name literally translated. And there are many such examples.
Sincerely, Edward. --Петров Эдуард (talk) 21:59, 3 Tisema 2022 (UTC)
- You certainly have a point. It happens, but not often. But in this case I found Pasiteli a terrible transliteration. It is French, then pronounce it as French, and not as a American would do.
- If you do not like Kelelalo, then I suggest Pasetele, at least closer to the French pronounciation. Tauʻolunga (talk) 07:51, 4 Tisema 2022 (UTC)
- I agree, Pasetele sounds harmonious. --Петров Эдуард (talk) 14:21, 4 Tisema 2022 (UTC)

Translation of Makahokovalu to English?
[edit source]Dear @Tauʻolunga
Mālō e lelei.
I am David Llamazares Lara, from Wikipedia in Spanish, and I hope this message finds you well.
I am reaching out to inquire if you would be so kind as to assist with the translation of the Makahokovalu page into English. We require your expertise to ensure accurate and appropriate translations for necessary updates. Your assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated, as it will contribute to the accessibility and comprehensibility of the content for a wider audience.
Thank you very much for considering this request.

Some doubts about Nuku'alofa
[edit source]Dear @Tauʻolunga
Mālō e lelei again.
Through various readings I've done on the English Wikipedia and with faulty translations in Tongan, I've been able to verify that your capital, Nuku'alofa, lies between two districts: Kolomotu'a and Kolofo'ou. This is why I'd like to inquire: which area holds greater importance, the one located in the Kolomotu'a district or the one in Kolofo'ou? Or are both equally significant?
Mālō ‘aupito.
We remain in touch.
David Ll L (Alea) 23:28, 15 Maʻasi 2024 (UTC)
- Your information is incorrect. Kolomotuʻa and Kolofoʻou are just 2 of the many suburbs of Nukuʻalofa. Albeit they are the 2 central ones. Both have importance. For example Kolomotuʻa has the royal palace, Kolofoʻou has the main market. Tauʻolunga (talk) 04:58, 17 Maʻasi 2024 (UTC)
- So, I have some new questions. Aren't Vahe supposed to be divisions that group several localities? I would like to know especially because of this image showing 7 districts on the island of Tongatapu (). My doubt arises because Nuku'alofa is situated between two of this districts, and I would like to know the reason for this occurrence.
Mālō 'aupito.
David Ll L (Alea) 16:34, 17 Maʻasi 2024 (UTC)- These are election boundaries, named after the largest or most important village in that district. Anyway, do not put too much faith in that map, it is full with inaccuracies and even errors. Vahe are like provinces, and, traditionally, there are only 3 on Tongatapu (west, central, east).Tauʻolunga (talk) 05:40, 18 Maʻasi 2024 (UTC)
