☀ Half of all children living in 50 countries across Europe and Central Asia are exposed to frequent heatwaves – double the global average of 1 in 4 children. More than 92 million children are already exposed to frequent heatwaves in a region where temperatures are rising at a faster rate than in any other region worldwide. In Central Asia, the frequency, duration and severity of heatwaves have all increased by, on average, 30 per cent in the past 60 years. 📘 Read the new policy brief which provides clear recommendations on how communities and governments can better protect our youngest citizens from the increasing and negative impacts of heatwaves and heat stress. Heat stress is a rapidly increasing health risk for children and pregnant women. We need to take #ClimateAction now. https://lnkd.in/dFkxaM2N

Heatwaves in Europe and Central Asia are threatening children’s health and survival, with babies and young #children most at risk. With an inability to sweat, faster metabolisms, and difficulty regulating temperatures, #babies are the most vulnerable to #heat #stress. In #Europe and #Central #Asia, temperatures are rising at the fastest rate globally. Governments must adapt systems and services #children depend on, including providing safe #water, health care and heat-resistant buildings to protect children’s lives. Heatwaves are far from a fun day in the sun. Extreme #heat and #humidity can be highly uncomfortable and pose serious health risks, particularly for infants, children, pregnant women, and the elderly. Here is what you need to remember during #heatwaves: Drink water at regular intervals before you are thirsty. Wear light and loose clothes. Carry a water bottle and a small towel, so you can hydrate and cool down by placing a wet towel on your neck. Check to see if your community has a heat relief or cooling centre near you. Keep your house cool and stay out of heat during hot hours. #foreverychild, a safe future.

☀ According to #Children’s Climate Risk Index, over 71% of children in #Tajikistan, totaling 2,8 million children, are exposed to heatwaves every year. Heatwaves in Tajikistan pose a serious threat to children's health and wellbeing. Extreme heat can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, and life-threatening heat stroke. Children are especially vulnerable to the impacts of #heatwaves due to their smaller body size, faster metabolism, and less developed thermoregulatory systems.   To keep the #children safe during the heatwaves, #parents and #caregivers must ensure daily access to clean water and adequate hydration, sufficient shade, and limit children's outdoor activities in the hottest part of the day. Educating children and their families on heat #safety, hydration, and recognizing the signs of heat-related illnesses can save lives during extreme heat events. UNICEF calls on #governments to act urgently, and civil society and #donors to provide support to reduce children’s exposure to heatwaves and ensure that the needs and rights of children are at the heart of #climate #change adaptation and mitigation efforts.
