Just finished reading Maus for the first time and this part really spoke to me.
I always reblog this when I see it, but this time I want to add something.
Art Spiegelman is not a zionist. He still feels he is a displaced diaspora and does not seem to call himself anti-zionist, but he actively disproves of Israel's actions.
He describes Israel as resembling those with PTSD who begin to beat down on others. He feels it is a failed and very sad idea. I feel people never speak on this, as well as his criticism of the government response to 9/11.
He was in New York as it was happening, he had to pick up his child from school and it actively traumatized him due to his father being a Holocaust survivor. He still actively criticized the US and their bombing of the Middle East, rightfully implying the US government is actively filled with terrorists. It is.
I will not say he is the model perfect opinion, I will not say there is no fault to his work. But he at least acknowledges despite whatever he feels that no one deserves to be terrorized to the degree the Middle East has. Please keep Palestine in your thoughts and do what you can.
YES!!! Given this is my post with the most engagement by far of anything else on my blog, I’ve been meaning to write another post altogether to talk about Spiegelman’s views on Israel, Palestine, and America.
And yes, support Palestine, demand a cease fire, speak out loudly against the genocide Israel is enacting on the Palestinian people, and call for countries around the world to do what they can to cut off support to Israel.
