Since the early 1990s, Thailand has experienced huge surges of foreign capital imports. That, coupled with the 1997 crisis and the recent financial crisis, suggests that the determinants of international capital flows to Thailand and the risk-taking behaviour of international investors may have changed accordingly. This thesis is a story with two dimensions. First, we study the determinants of international capital flows to Thailand in light of the two crises, dealing with integrated-cointegrated variables. Our goal is to develop a statistically well-founded Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) to investigate both the long- and the short-run determinants of capital flows to Thailand, differentiating between external and domestic factors. The other dimension of this thesis is to explore the impact of the Asian crisis on the underlying stochastic process of the foreign capital inflow sector of the Thai economy. In particular, we want to examine whether the Asian crisis was sufficiently influential to break the long-term investment behaviour of foreign investors in Thailand. This thesis contributes insights for an empirical analysis of a cointegrated VAR model.
