This is a Jasberry superfood rice farm. But wait, what are those plants that... aren’t rice? Jasberry farmers practice organic regenerative agriculture. That means alongside prioritizing a healthy rice crop and high yields, they work hard to build soil health and promote biodiversity. This greenery forms a tree line between rice fields. Tree lines prevent soil erosion, runoff of nutrients into waterways, and wind damage. They also add organic matter to the soil, house countless species of insects and birds, improve water infiltration, and create shade for an afternoon break. In other words, they do much more than sit there and look pretty! In conventional farming, trees are usually removed to create more space for the crop, depleting biodiversity and soil health. At Jasberry, we know that the future of food must be brighter. Join the #JasberryMovement to support diverse, lively farms.

Our farmers don’t buy fertilizer. So, where does the organic fertilizer come from? Organic fertilizer is made by the biodiversity on the field! All these animals ⬇️ and more eat excess material from the field and their poop is used to fertilize fields with nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus, and other essential nutrients. On top of that, the high diversity of plants provides organic matter, which falls to the ground and decomposes. This process enriches the soil over time and slowly releases essential nutrients for our rice. Most farmers also collect plant and animal organic matter to create compost and fermented fertilizer. This speeds up the decomposition process so that the nutrients are more available once they reach the field. By creating fertilizer on the farm, farmers avoid the burden of high and fluctuating fertilizer prices. It also improves soil health and stores carbon. Truly a win-win-win!

You’ve probably never thought about how rice is planted. Luckily, there are people who give that a lot of thought! Check out one common way of planting rice: Mechanical transplanting. Mechanical transplanting is a mesmerizing method of planting rice! A machine called a transplanter is loaded with mats of rice seeds from the nursery and plants them in rows. This is an efficient method of planting and has the benefit of planting in a perfectly even grid! This even spacing can increase yields and decrease instances of disease Many Jasberry superfood rice farmers use this method of planting, and it is truly fun to watch! Check out the video of one amazing Jasberry farmer, Rewadee, planting rice with her mechanical transplanter 😊

We bet you didn’t think you could plant rice by throwing it onto the field 🤯. And yes, it works! This method of rice planting is called parachuting. How does it work? When it’s time for the rice seed to leave the nursery, mats of germinated seed are lifted out and the seeds are carefully separated. The baby rice is then taken to the field where it is thrown onto the field! The small balls of soil on the bottom of the baby rice make it bottom-heavy, so when it is parachuted (thrown) onto the field, it lands right-side-up. This is why they called it parachute! Rice soil is characteristically soft, allowing the seed to protrude into the soil and take root. If you ask us, this is one of the most fun activities to do on the farm 😄

Our health is stronger than before, we have no health issues. The people who use chemicals have to go to the hospital almost every month, but we never do” - Nanmoon, Jasberry Superfood Rice Farmer Nanmoon has been farming for over 45 years. He has seen the impact of constant exposure to synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers, and continues to see it among his fellow farmers. 14 years ago, he switched to organic farming to increase his income and successfully climbed out of an immense debt. A benefit he did not expect, however, was a profound improvement in his health. In fact, the number one reason our farmers stick with growing Jasberry Superfood Rice is the change they see in their own health! The organic revolution was born when customers worldwide demanded healthier food options. However, the health impact on farmers of switching to organic farming is rarely considered. At Jasberry, we’ve seen the profound difference it makes! Supporting organic products means supporting not only your health, but that of farmers as well. People often say that win-wins are impossible, but at Jasberry, we’ve witnessed a win-win-win unfold: Jasberry improves consumers’ health, lifts small-scale farmers out of poverty, and promotes environmental sustainability. When farmers switch to growing Jasberry Superfood Rice, all three of these benefits come together. This healthier, organic rice is a higher-value crop than conventional rice, allowing farmers to earn more while supporting both the environment and consumer well-being. But if it’s so great, why isn’t everyone doing this? Well, it’s not easy. Ensuring that farmers are well paid across a complex supply chain requires immense time and diligence. Upholding regenerative and organic agricultural standards requires expertise, training, annual audits, and additional costs. There are constant hurdles, and it’s always easier to be cheap than fair. But we believe it pays off to do things right. After 13 years of building Jasberry, we’re thrilled to see the impact we’ve had on farmer livelihoods, the land, and the health of our consumers. Join the #JasberryMovement to understand the impact a single grain of rice can have.

Have you ever wondered what we do when rice catches a disease? Rice can contract a wide array of diseases. When rice gets sick, yield declines, putting farmers at financial risk. Conventionally, chemical fungicides and bactericides are used to manage diseases, but these are not used in organic farming. So, how do we manage without chemicals? Jasberry farmers fight rice disease organically using a few tactics: Crop rotation: Rotating crops breaks disease cycles and prevents build-up. It also provides farmers with a backup crop in the case of harvest loss to disease. Organic fertilizer: Adding organic matter builds soil structure, neutralizes pH, and promotes healthy roots, which help fend off pathogens. Integrated pest management: This involves encouraging natural predators, like helpful bugs and birds, to prevent disease-spreading vectors. IPM also promotes biodiversity! This is a small sample of the various ways that Jasberry farmers effectively prevent disease, saving them money and preventing environmental harm!
