Reliable and scalable solution working with smallholder farmers to create biochar from crop waste instead of burning it.
เกี่ยวกับเรา
An impact venture of Warm Heart Worldwide, Biochar Life cools the climate by helping to remove carbon from the atmosphere. We mobilize a huge previously untapped human resource, the smallholder farmers of the developing world, to convert currently burned crop waste, a huge, previously ignored source of greenhouse gases, into carbon sequestering biochar. We train smallholder farmers to biochar, not burn, their crop waste, certify the amount of carbon removed, provide access to global carbon offset markets for the verified carbon sequestration and ensure immediate payment, thereby encouraging others also to biochar, not burn.

“Tanzanians helping Tanzanians!” Karimu Local Program Area Lead, Francis Wolfgang Panga, organized Biochar training for 580 farmers after running a successful pilot. Here is what Francis has to say: "Today, we successfully distributed drums for biochar production to our trainers and verifiers. A total of 30 trainers and verifiers will be working with 580 farmers across Ayalagaya and Arri to produce biochar. The process will primarily involve using corn cobs and maize stalks, with drums utilized for cobs and pits for stalks. These trainers and verifiers were carefully selected and trained by Biochar Life Kenya to ensure they are fully qualified for this task. We are confident that, under Karimu's supervision, they will produce high-quality biochar. Data collected from our previous pilot program indicates that using biochar can save a farmer up to USD 120 by reducing reliance on industrial fertilizers. This not only lowers production costs but also increases profitability for farmers. Moreover, biochar production plays a vital role in capturing carbon from the atmosphere, contributing to the fight against climate change and protecting our planet. We look forward to seeing more positive results in the coming days."

💥 Supplier Spotlight: Biochar Life – Empowering smallholder farmers in the Global South 💥 It’s our pleasure to introduce our supply partner Biochar Life, a Public Benefit Corporation with the mission to ensure environmental sustainability and community empowerment, providing both ecological and socio-economic benefits. Active across Kenya, Malawi, Thailand, and Indonesia, Biochar Life empowers smallholder farmers to convert their crop waste — typically burned and a major source of greenhouse gases and cause of respiratory diseases — into biochar. This approach addresses climate challenges and fosters resilient and thriving farming communities. 💰 Economic Empowerment: Biochar Life’s initiatives create local employment, foster economic growth, and ensure social inclusion. 🌱 Circularity & Soil Improvement: The production and usage of biochar from crop waste promote circular and sustainable farming practices. 🌏 Air Quality Improvement: By replacing the burning of crop waste with biochar production, air pollution from open-field burning is reduced, improving respiratory health in local communities. Since 2022, the financing through offtake agreements from Carbonfuture and its customers gives farmers across the world access to the global carbon removal market and therewith passage to a new revenue stream. It also facilitates the growing adoption of biochar production and usage by smallholder farmers. “This partnership has fostered confidence among buyers in the quality and impact of our carbon removal credits. Carbonfuture’s data-driven approach and robust third-party verification have been crucial in helping us validate and scale our carbon removal ambitions. By using the Plant Village App with Carbonfuture’s MRV, we ensure accurate monitoring of biochar production by smallholder farmers. Through the integration via API into Carbonfuture’s platform, a transparent data look-through from the removal credit to the data input will be ensured,” said Matt Rickard, COO of Biochar Life. Biochar Life’s journey has been marked by significant milestones such as training over 20,000 farmers, launching new projects in Kenya, Malawi, Thailand, and Indonesia, and sequestering over 10,000 tonnes of CO₂ over the last two years. Looking ahead, Biochar Life plans to scale operations into new regions and roll out advanced technology to reach 25,000 tonnes of CDR by 2025. These efforts will enhance both carbon removal and community resilience.
