We are excited to introduce our new material solution for enhanced EV battery safety, LASTAN™. This nonwoven fabric is flame-retardant and highly flexible, serving as an outstanding alternative to conventional materials for thermal runaway protection. It can be used in various parts of EV battery packs, such as attaching it to the top cover, placing it between battery cells, or applying it to areas that require usage tailored to the shape of protective components (for example, busbar protection sleeves). Although electric vehicles are becoming more common worldwide, we understand that battery safety is still a major concern for many car users. Thus, there is increasing demand for materials in EV battery cover applications that have excellent resistance against flames and particle blasts, as well as good electrical insulation properties. At Asahi Kasei, we took this challenge and developed LASTAN™ with consumer concerns and safety at the top of our minds. Even when a 1,300°C flame is applied, the temperature on the opposite side of LASTAN™ remains below 400°C. In addition to other Asahi Kasei battery solutions, we will exhibit the new LASTAN™ grade at the North American Battery Show from October 7 to 10, 2024, in Detroit, Michigan. At this event, Asahi Kasei will also present a live demo for attendees to see and experience LASTAN™ for themselves. On September 14th, 50 employees and family members from Asahi Kasei Europe joined this year’s RhineCleanUp where participants collected garbage along the riverbank near the Düsseldorf office. The RhineCleanUp initiative was brought to life in 2018 to keep Germany’s longest river and its surroundings clean from garbage. More than 50,000 volunteers joined the CleanUp in 2023, and 300 tons of garbage were collected. RhineCleanUp is not only a wonderful opportunity to contribute to the local community and nature, but also to connect with colleagues and family members while nurturing team spirit.
