Synopsis
Optimus Prime is unhappy that Hot Shot hasn't yet mastered his Mul-T-Cog and insists Heatwave do more to encourage him. The recruits meanwhile are about to start another sim rescue. Wedge has it all planned out, but it turns out Hot Shot can't use his jet mode as he's already picked ATV to try to beat Medix's track record. As the other recruits go back to replan the rescue, Hot Shot complains to Heatwave about the one-per-day limitation on his alternate modes, but Heatwave tell him he can break through this limitation if he tries hard enough. They start a sim where Hot Shot has to rescue Chuck from a rickety bridge so he can try using his jet mode. Attempt after attempt fails, and when he finally manages to transform, it's into ATV mode. Though he's keen to continue, Hot Shot's running low on energon.
He later overhears Heatwave and Optimus discussing his failure and, dejected, goes to get checked out by Medix. Medix thinks the problem is Hot Shot isn't motivated enough, but Hot Shot thinks he's plenty motivated, as the ability to Mul-T-Change would make him famous. Medix sticks him in a stasis pod to recuperate.
Hot Shot wakes up some time later to find the academy deserted. Heatwave's distress call from the Sigma comes up—the other recruits have hit trouble while doing a rescue on an oil rig and none of the other Rescue Bots are available. Though Heatwave asserts it's too dangerous for one Bot, Hot Shot charges through the GroundBridge to help. He saves Whirl after her helicopter mode gives out by catching her with his jet mode, however he's not going to have enough time to save Medix while on foot. He manages to focus and transform to ATV mode so he can get to Medix in time. He follows this up by towing the two tugs with the survivors in his hovercraft mode.
At that point they shut down the sim that Hot Shot unknowingly GroundBridged into. Hot Shot is shocked that they tricked him, but as they point out, they helped him master his Mul-T-Cog. He's later congratulated by Optimus Prime, who drops a hint that there is still more the Mul-T-Cog can do that he hasn't unlocked.
