Constructicon (ROTF)
From Transformers Wiki
The name or term "Constructicon" refers to more than one character or idea. For a list of other meanings, see Constructicon (disambiguation). |
The Constructicons are a group of Decepticons that take the form of various construction vehicles, many sharing alternate modes, body-types and even names. Constructicons have been built since the dawn of the Transformer race, and used to be considered simple drones.[1]
Unlike previous continuities, it seems as if only some, not all, of the Constructicons are combiners. They combine into Devastator.

Revenge of The Fallen film
NEST followed Demolishor to Shanghai, China, and he was executed by Optimus Prime.
After the AllSpark shard was retrieved from NEST's secure bunker at Diego Garcia, Long Haul, Rampage, Mixmaster, and Scrapmetal secreted themselves aboard the Bayos freighter heading towards the North Atlantic. They were eventually joined by Ravage, carrying Scalpel and an AllSpark fragment. Once the ship passed over the Laurentian Abyss, the Decepticons jumped overboard and dived down to where Megatron's broken body lay. Scalpel ordered the death of Scrapmetal to rebuild Megatron, a request that Long Haul and Mixmaster readily granted. Soon, Megatron was reborn!
Hightower, Skipjack, another Long Haul, and a yellow dump truck waited in a quarry near the Egyptian pyramids for the arrival of Scavenger, Overload, Scrapper, another Mixmaster, and a second bulldozer, and they combined into Devastator. Devastator battled Skids and Mudflap, before climbing up the Great Pyramid of Giza to excavate the Star Harvester within. Devastator was blown up by an experimental rail gun fired by the USS Kidd.
Elsewhere during Operation: Firestorm, Rampage, Long Haul, Mixmaster, and a non-combiner Scrapper hunted for Sam Witwicky in an abandoned town. Rampage was ordered by Starscream to spring a trap by demanding Sam hand over the Matrix of Leadership in exchange for his captive parents Ron and Judy, but Bumblebee attacked and killed him. Jetfire killed Mixmaster, while the others died in a bombing raid by the United States Air Force. Revenge of the Fallen

IDW comics
In the distant past, the AllSpark Cube created the Dynasty of Primes, a race of powerful, trans-dimensional beings as the first inhabitants of Cybertron. The Cube gave these beings mighty powers, as well as terraforming their world, but it was not limitless, and gradually became depleted. The first beings learned that the AllSpark's power could be replenished by harvesting the energy of stars, but they were unable to locate new stars to suit their purposes, despite their amazing ability to travel between dimensions. Once again, the Cube came to the rescue, creating a race of workers, who had the ability to change their shape.
The "builder" workers were among the very first of these new beings, who would construct a harvester when a suitable sun had been found. Once built, the device would drain the energy of these stars, thus replenishing the AllSpark. Defiance #4 The Primes ruled harvesters could not be used on a sun that replenished life, but one of them began to defy this rule and gathered together a few rogue "construction drones" and a Seeker to secretly harvest suns and ignoring the genocide they caused. The other Primes found out and followed them to Earth, and The Fallen Prime teleported his servants elsewhere, but the Seeker Jetfire turned on the builders and killed them. Tales of the Fallen #3
It is assumed that at some point during the civil war on Cybertron, the remaining builders sided with Megatron, the new protege of their only surviving ancient master, The Fallen. In Megatron's Decepticon army, they became known as the Constructicons. In at least one battle, Devastator was present. Tales of the Fallen #2
There were many Constructicons aboard the Nemesis, as they were needed to excavate the harvester. Soundwave did not consider them smart enough to be allowed on the bridge. When the Nemesis and Ark collided, Soundwave had them placed in the cargo hold of the Longshot when they gave pursuit of the Autobot ship. Convergence chapter 1 When they returned to the Nemesis, the Constructicons grumbled at almost immediately having to return to Earth, so Soundwave placed them in stasis. Convergence chapter 4
During the war, Demolishor destroyed an Autobot colony guarded by Sideswipe, who swore revenge and tracked him to Buenos Aires, Argentina. The Constructicon drew out Sideswipe but fled when NEST forces led by Optimus Prime and William Lennox arrived. Tales of the Fallen #2
Scavenger, Long Haul, Scrapper, Overload, and Mixmaster arrived in Egypt together along with other Constructicons and Decepticons to battle the Autobots. Revenge of the Fallen #3
Some of the Constructicons combined into Devastator and revealed the star harvester hidden beneath a pyramid. Devastator was destroyed by a prototype rail gun soon afterwards. At the same time, Rampage and Long Haul fought in the battle and were defeated by Bumblebee and Jetfire, respectively. Revenge of the Fallen #4
The Veiled Threat
The Constructicons Kickback, Trample, and Tread came to Earth hoping to be able to revive their leader Megatron. They were mining for uranium in the Australian outback in the hopes that if they collected enough energy, they could jump-start Megatron's spark.
NEST became aware of their presence when they picked up their intermittent energy signatures. They sent a strike team consisting of Optimus Prime, Ironhide, Salvage, William Lennox, and Kaminari Ishihara to take care of them. The three Constructicons put up a good fight but were killed. The Veiled Threat
Titan Magazines comics
There are loads of Constructicons! Kickback, Tread, and Trample are among their number. #17's Law and Disorder
The Decepticons recovered Devastator's remains, and brought them to the peaks of British Columbia, Canada, so that the behemoth could be repaired by a squad of Constructicon drone units. These drones appeared to be a model of purple generic drones, and had both crane and front load shovel forms. That nasty Stratosphere blew up the poor drones and then destroyed the half-rebuilt Devastator. Head in the Clouds
Toy bios
After getting dismantled by the humans' railgun, at least some of the Constructicons that formed Devastator at the time survived. Ironhide made it his mission to pick them off one by one, starting with Mixmaster. Enforcer Ironhide VS Mixmaster

Transformers (2007)
- Bonecrusher (Deluxe Class, 2007)
- TakaraTomy ID Number: MD-09
- Bonecrusher transforms into a Buffalo mine-protected vehicle, with an articulated "mine-fork" for removing mines or cars or robots or unsuspecting buildings from his path. Although the fork is packaged with its sets of tines opposing one another, they can be rotated into a more appropriate side-by-side vehicle mode configuration, which the instructions fail to call out. He has six rolling wheels in this mode, and two sculpted, non-functional spare wheels.
- His robot mode is, like most of the movie toys, based on pre-final design work, explaining his extremely long extensible arms as seen on some concept art. The mine-fork splits to form a grabber-claw, which can snap onto victims with a geared slider Automorph mechanism. His hips can often detach from the codpiece holding them together.
- He is extremely short compared to many contemporary Deluxes.
- He is named "Bonescrusher" on the Canadian cross-sell. Guess how Bonecrusher feels about that little misspelling.
Revenge of the Fallen
Legends Class
- Hightower (EZ Collection DX, 2009)
- Long Haul (EZ Collection DX, 2009)
- Decepticon Mixmaster (EZ Collection DX, 2009)
- Decepticon Overload (EZ Collection DX, 2009)
- Decepticon Rampage (EZ Collection DX, 2009)
- Scavenger (EZ Collection DX, 2009)
- Scrapper (EZ Collection DX, 2009)
- Release date: July 23 2009
- Known designers: Hironori Kobayashi (TakaraTomy)
- EZ Collection "DX Devastator" is made up of the seven individually-carded Constructicon toys Hightower, Long Haul, Mixmaster, Overload, Rampage, Scavenger, and Scrapper, resulting in a roughly Deluxe-sized toy. Due to his size and the complexity of even getting this to work at all, he ends up with little articulation outside of a bit of swivel at the limb connections.
- Takara stock imagery shows him with a silver-painted face, but the final product has this reduced to a bunch of small "weathering" paint applications on gray plastic.
- Constructicon Devastator (Legends Class multi-pack, 2010)
- In Hasbro's markets, the Legends-class Constructicons were only sold together in a 7-pack. They are otherwise identical to the prior Takara releases. In the United States and Canada, said exclusive lies with Walmart. In the United Kingdom, the set was only available through Argos.
- Devastator "Origin Color" Set (EZ Collection, 2010)
- Release date: March 20 2010
- Takara reissued the complete team of seven Legend class Constructicons in a singular box set. This time around, every toy has been redone in a Generation-1-Constructicon-inspired bright green and purple color scheme. He even comes packaged in the same clear box set the Hasbro version used.
- In keeping with the "Generation 1" theme of the set, two of the Constructicons have been renamed, with the truss crane now being Hook and the bulldozer Bonecrusher. (Overload has not been renamed as he has no Generation 1 proxy.)
Deluxe Class
- Rampage (Deluxe Class, 2009)
- TakaraTomy ID number: RD-06
- Rampage transforms from a yellow bulldozer similar to a Komatsu D575A into one of two robot mode configurations, the first of which (his actual in-fiction robot form) is distinctly Vehicon-esque. It lacks any functional legs, instead featuring a spring-loaded "jackhammer" assembly. When the figure is bounced along the ground in this mode, his Mech Alive feature is activated, and a pair of pistons that frame his head pump back and forth. The shovel can be removed in this mode and used as a stand. If legs are preferred, his jackhammer splits and his elaborate kibble backpack unfolds, together forming four leg-struts to create a free-standing robot form that is rather centaurian in design. Though not mentioned in the instructions or package, the aforementioned backpack can remain folded in robot mode for a more movie-accurate, two-legged 'play' mode of sorts. He features real rubber treads which become arm-mounted whip weapons in robot mode. Unfortunately, due to this design, the treads themselves do not function in vehicle mode.
- Like several toys in the Revenge of the Fallen toyline, Rampage has had a mold change done somewhere between his instructions being drawn up and the final version of the toy. On the final toy, the rear flap behind the cabin of the bulldozer runs into a screw section used to hold the robot pelvis together. This change also affects where the rear flap and the bulldozer shovel connect in robot mode. On the instructions, this flap is shown as folding flat against the back of the vehicle and said flap is also folded down much farther in robot mode to connect to the shovel. The mold change seems to account for the shovel connection issue in robot mode, but not the problem in vehicle mode. Unlike some others, this change does not directly affect any of the toy's action features or articulation.
- Rampage (Deluxe Class, 2010)
- TakaraTomy name: Decepticon Rampage Desert Combat
- TakaraTomy ID number: RD-21
- As a redeco of Rampage's first Deluxe Class toy in red, this release of Rampage represents a more movie accurate version of the Rampage who fought Bumblebee in Egypt. Hasbro's version of red Rampage is a straight colour swap, with his yellow plastic replaced with red plastic. As one of the last two figures released in the Revenge of the Fallen Deluxe Class assortment, the red version of Rampage and his casemate Evac were insanely difficult (if not impossible) to find in U.S. retail stores.
- TakaraTomy went much further than Hasbro with their version of red Rampage, dubbed "Decepticon Rampage Desert Combat"; Rampage features redecoing on his shovel blade to match the one used on the Rampage prop vehicle seen in the movie (including horizontal lines to match the slatted look of the prop). The figure also features a more screen-accurate red and yellow color scheme, much like his on-screen counterpart.
Voyager Class
- Demolishor (Voyager Class, 2009)
- TakaraTomy ID number: RD-03
- Demolishor transforms from a red Terex RH400 mining excavator into a unique robot mode via a surprisingly complex transformation. His Mech Alive gimmick in robot mode is a drum in each arm that spins when you move his lower arm (not in the shoulders as the packaging call out states). He has real rubber treads that sadly can't move, and no little plastic wheels that help it move either. He is almost impossible to stand up—let alone pose—but it can be managed.
- In the film, Demolishor's vehicle mode features a lot more white. This toy's colors are actually a match to Scavenger's colors.
- Like several Revenge of the Fallen toys, such as Voyager Class Starscream and Leader Class Optimus Prime, Demolishor is yet another victim of late mold changes due to 2008-2009 economic problems. On the back of the box, his treads are pictured as being made of several individual, linked plastic sections. The sections were apparently recast as a single rubber tread ring instead for the final toy.
- Also, left out on the instruction was that the shovel "teeth"/robot mode fingers are articulated (albeit via a very tight joint).
- Mixmaster (Voyager Class, 2009)
- TakaraTomy ID number: RD-12
- Accessories: Missile
- Known designers: Hisashi Yuki (TakaraTomy)
- Voyager Class Revenge of the Fallen Mixmaster transforms into a gray and silver cement mixer with purple windows and headlights, based loosely on the Mack Granite truck seen in the film. He is notoriously one of the hardest to transform toys from the Movie toyline. The vehicle mode's mixing drum is incapable of rotating due to the transformation, but does boast a pair of gigantic Decepticon logos on either side (though in a different orientation than what is seen in the final film). The cement chute at the rear of the vehicle mode can accurately raise and lower on a hinge, and the cannon can be fixed to fire directly overhead or behind at pursuing vehicles.
- The packaging calls out Mech Alive gimmickry in the form of "spinning gears" on his chest, but the feature is only present in the thighs and forearms, which reveal shifting internal bits when the joints are rotated. The robot mode's missile-firing cannon is locked in place on its back pointing straight upward; it can be raised over Mixmaster's head, although this involves letting the cab hang loose on his back as it's designed to attach to the cannon. Alternately the toy can be transformed to its artillery cannon-like Battle Mode that has him essentially performing a belly flop, letting the launcher fire forward. At least, according to the Battle Mode's official depiction in the instructions.
- The instructions and the box pictures show the joint that attaches the cab to the robot to be inverted, with the released toy having the cab joint upside-down as compared with what is in the instructions and box pictures. Out of the box, the toy cannot exactly mimic the battle mode of the instructions or stock photos, but it's close enough for most people to assume they were doing something wrong until one realizes this mis-assembly. The joint can be corrected by the removal and re-attachment of the metal pin behind the front-bumper, but this is not as easy as it sounds and may potentially be damaging to the toy. This only applies to the Hasbro version of the instructions, however, as the Japanese Takara release had instructions depicting a completely different battle mode,[3] which utilised the joint in the direction it is assembled, as well as pegs and holes present on the rear wheel segments and the inside of the cab respectively (see image to the right with highlighted circles).
- The image of the cement mixer mode on the packaging has been flipped horizontally as well, leaving the location of the ladder switched. Additionally, the robot mode image on the packaging has a different mold for the mixing drum shells, with rectangular-shaped pegs rather than circular.
- Back Road Brawl (Multi-pack, 2009)
- Accessories: Missile
- Available only in the Toys"R"Us-exclusive "Back Road Brawl" figure pack with Hoist, this release of Mixmaster features a new head that was gang-molded to Mixmaster, but until now went unused. His colour scheme has been extensively redecoed in a layout resembling the Generation 1 Constructicons. He is decorated with a small tampograph reading "Ol' Lefty", a reference to how Generation 1 Mixmaster formed Devastator's left leg.
- He retains the mis-assembled cab joint/faulty instructions.
- Demolishor Shanghai Attack (Voyager Class, 2010)
- ID number: RD-19
- Demolishor Shanghai Attack redecoes Demolishor's voyager class toy with colors that more closely resemble those seen in his film appearance.
- Shanghai Showdown (Multi-pack, 2010)
- Hasbro's release of the screen-accurate Demolishor features brown dirt decos on his treads and body. He is packed with more accurately decoed versions of Skids and Mudflap in their ice cream truck bodies.
- Long Haul (Voyager Class, 2009)
- TakaraTomy ID number: RD-17
- Part of Revenge of the Fallen Voyager Class wave 5, Long Haul transforms from a green genericized "earth mover" dump truck with a functional truck bed into a bulky robot mode. In robot mode, he has three Mech Alive gimmicks in which turning his head also turns a cog in his chest, while bending his elbows moves some pistons and finally the "springs" connected to his feet move inwards when moving them. Only the piston gimmick is advertised on the packaging. Meanwhile, each forearm houses a spring-loaded flip-out sword.
- Long Haul was packaged in vehicle mode in very limited numbers before a running change packaged him in robot mode.
Supreme Combiner Class
- Constructicon Devastator (Supreme Combiner Class, 2009)
- TakaraTomy ID number: RD-16
- Accessories: Mixmaster's truck "nose", Scavenger's shovel-bucket
- Known designers: Takio Ejima (TakaraTomy), Shogo Hasui (initial concept)
- Devastator is formed from the combination of six transforming construction vehicle toys that do not have individual robot modes. Unlike prior cases of this format, Devastator's vehicles represent separate Transformers, and most of them have other non-combiner toys that do have robot modes.
- Despite the figure's complex appearance (from the front anyway), the limbs' transformations into combined mode are rather simple. Fortunately, this makes him a lot easier to muck with than some of the other larger-scale Revenge of the Fallen toys. This is good, because Devastator is ENORMOUS. His smallest limbs (his legs) are the size of Deluxe-class toys, and his largest components are bigger than Leader-class toys. While the legs can not be swapped (unless for some reason you want a backwards walking Devastator), the arms can be swapped around. The pegs meant to plug Rampage and Long Haul into Devastator's hips also fit snugly into the sockets meant for connecting Scrapper and Hightower to Scavenger... if you're inclined to have a random arm connected to a stray leg with no body in between, or a vehicle mode about as useful as a poorly matched Micromaster Combiner pair.
- The toy's electronics are all in the Mixmaster component. Pressing the button makes Devastator's mouth open and activates voice clips and engine sounds, as well as green lights in his mouth and eyes. Pressing the button for a few seconds activates his "Vortex grinder". However, the button trigger is so sensitive that he never shuts up. In Devastator mode, his mouth can be locked into the open position by clicking his lower jaw sections into the large tank treads that form his shoulders. His mouth is enormous, and it lights up all pretty and green. He can easily swallow any Legends-class toy and spit it out the other side by opening up the back of his head. Covering Devastator's head when separating him from the torso and turning him back into Mixmaster's vehicle mode activates the transformation noise, and after that somehow makes engine stalling noises without pulling the trigger.
- Sadly, Devastator has a hard time standing on all four of his limbs, and is most stable standing on his hind legs. This is mainly because the most weight is located in the head, and his fingers are not made to hold that weight. He will also look straight to the ground unless you lock his head in place with the lower jaw.
- The Japanese TakaraTomy release of this figure has extra paint applications on Devastator's face, for a better resemblance to the final CG model.
Transformers (2010)
Legends Class
- Rampage (Legends Class, 2010)
- This Legends Class Rampage is an all-new mold that is different from the Legends class Rampage that came with Legends Class Constructicon Devastator. Because he is not encumbered with the need to combine, both his robot and vehicle modes are much more accurate and detailed. His "jackhammer" mode can be achieved by connecting his legs together and flipping his cab-feet down as the tip (as per the stock photos), although he will not be able to stand up well. Meanwhile, his instructions depict a more stable biped configuration, with his legs spread out and his cab-feet folded back in their vehicle mode position as his "heels".
- Skipjack (EZ Collection, 2010)
- Skipjack is a (thus far) Japanese exclusive yellow redeco of the Legends Class figure above. The stock photography for both EZ Collection Skipjack and Payload depict them in shades that hew closer to orange than the yellow they came out in. Whether this was an artifact of the photographic process or an intentional plastic color-change is uncertain. Additionally, TakaraTomy's website calls the toy Rampage rather than Skipjack.
- Long Haul (Legends Class, 2010)
- This Legends Class Long Haul is an all-new mold that is different from the Legends class Long Haul that came with Legends class Constructicon Devastator. Because he is not encumbered with the need to combine, both his robot and vehicle modes are much more accurate and detailed.
- Payload (EZ Collection, 2010)
- Autobot Alliance Payload is a redeco of the non-combining Legends class figure above
- Stock photos of Payload had orange plastics, which was not present in the final product.
- Constructicon Devastator (Legends Class multi-pack, 2010)
- A Toys"R"Us-exclusive Generation 1-themed redeco of Legends Devastator and his components. Unlike the Takara's go at the same idea, this Devastator only uses purple for the Constructicons' windshields, and as a result is mostly lime green and gray. The seven individual Constructicons also have brown paint operations on and around their wheels to simulate dirt.
Deluxe Class
- Rampage Among The Ruins (Multi-pack, 2010)
- This Toys"R"Us-exclusive multi-pack contains a more screen-accurate red redeco of Deluxe Class Rampage, with a deco similar, but not identical to that of the Japanese Desert Combat Rampage. He is packed with Bumblebee and Ravage, replicating the battle scene that led to the two Decepticons' deaths in Revenge of the Fallen.
Voyager Class
- Payload (Voyager Class, 2010)
- This Payload is a redeco of the Revenge of the Fallen Long Haul.
Movie Advanced Series
- Devastator (Gift set, 2014)
- Released as part of Takara's Movie Advanced Series line, Devastator is a redeco of the Legends Class Constructicon components in a deco that more closely resembles his on-screen portrayal.
Studio Series
- Devastator (Gift set, 2020)
- Constructicon Scrapmetal (Deluxe Class, 2019)
- Constructicon Hightower (Deluxe Class, 2019)
- Constructicon Rampage (Voyager Class, 2019)
- Constructicon Long Haul (Voyager Class, 2019)
- Constructicon Mixmaster (Voyager Class, 2019)
- Constructicon Scavenger (Leader Class, 2019)
- Constructicon Scrapper (Voyager Class, 2020)
- Constructicon Skipjack (Voyager Class, 2020)
- Constructicon Overload (Leader Class, 2020)
- Known designers: Mike Booth (Hasbro), Shogo Hasui (TakaraTomy)
- Announced to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Revenge of the Fallen, Studio Series Devastator consists of eight (yes, eight) Constructicons to combine into one mechanical giant. While being meant to celebrate the tenth anniversary, some members were released in 2020.
- Despite the Studio Series line's focus on screen-accuracy, Devastator once again omits the yellow dump truck Constructicon, and replaces the second bulldozer who forms Devastator's hand in the film with an excavator, Scrapmetal (who died before Devastator was formed on-screen). Rampage was redecoed into Skipjack as an option for a more accurate Devastator. An even more accurate Devastator was released as a boxset with all eight Constructicons as a shared exclusive.
- For those new to the movie franchise, Devastator's picture is on the side of the packaging for his components to signify their involvement in his assembly, similar to the Prime Wars Trilogy combiner bots. This in turn is the faction symbol used for the Devastator boxset. A large picture of the prototype CG model for Devastator is also present.
- Unlike the vast majority of the Studio Series line, the Constructicons all lack Decepticon insignias in robot, vehicle and combined mode... unless one counts the extremely stylized hood ornament on Mixmaster.
Notes
- In the Revenge of the Fallen novel adaptation, the four Constructicons that accompany Ravage to the Laurentian Abyss are not named, but described as bipedal, disqualifying Rampage and Scavenger. This is contradicted by the movie, as the Rampage that later battles Bumblebee is almost certainly one of the four.
- One abandoned Constructicon concept by artist Steve Jung was a "nurse" that would have transformed into a Volvo wheel loader. It is unknown if this character later evolved into the character referred to as Scrapmetal, who alternately transformed into a Volvo excavator and a yellow front-end loader. Humorously, the Nurse's torso was seemingly reused for the design of Scrapper, whose model was used to represent Scrapmetal in Revenge of the Fallen.
- Other abandoned Constructicon concepts by Jung include a Vermeer rockwheel trencher whose robot mode body was built around the vehicle's large sawblade and a Sennebogen material handler that somehow managed to turn one crane arm into two.
Constructicons defined
“ | There are other Constructicons too, but we only have so much space on the page! | ” |
Determining who is and who isn't a Constructicon is a little more problematic than it may first appear. The subgroup is not especially well defined. Over time, any Decepticon from the 2009 film and related media/toys that has a construction vehicle alternate mode has been said to be a Constructicon. This is then complicated by the amount of Constructicons with the same name and form as each other, which indicates "Constructicon" is a type of drone... except then, with Constructicon Scouts and the drones in Titan Comics, there are explicit drones without individual names! Add in that bios and other media have given Constructicons individual personalities, even though they have counterparts: does this mean every Rampage, for example, has anger issues?
Also, the Revenge of the Fallen film taken by itself does not feature any Constructicons with individual robot modes that also form a part of Devastator. There's only construction vehicles that turn into individual robots, and construction vehicles that combine into Devastator. If one were to only watch the movie and not be aware of the toys or other media, one might come to the conclusion that Devastator is simply a really large member of the Constructicons that splits up into multiple construction vehicles for his alternate mode.
