Alternate Reality, Inc. was founded by Ethan Zachary after his video game shenanigans killed Optimus Prime. Luckily for the Autobot leader, Ethan saved his mind onto a floppy disk. The mind of Optimus was then used in video games, such as the one with Hyper-Fax, causing him to believe himself to be a video game character. Ethan attempted to correct him of that misconception, but failed.

Through a phone call and bugs, the Autobots learned of Optimus Prime's possible existence and Goldbug left to investigate. At Alternate Reality, Goldbug was shocked to find Optimus alive and well. In an attempt to jog his memory, Goldbug and Ethan crafted a plan to hack into Decepticon systems using Optimus. The Decepticons detected the intrusion, causing Optimus Prime to flee their systems. Still, Optimus was able to obtain data on Pretender technology, enabling the Autobots to create their own.

Scorponok sent the Decepticon Pretenders to attack Alternate Reality while he sent his own mind into the dataspace. Both fronts were defeated by the Autobot's own Pretenders defending Alternate Reality and Optimus Prime defending the dataspace. Still, though, Optimus Prime believed he was a video game character. Pretender to the Throne!

A copy of the Prime disk was stored at Alternate Reality, which was guarded by the Autobot Powermasters. However, the duo of Dreadwind and Darkwing absconded with the disk so that the Decepticons could use it to engineer a smart bomb that homed on to Optimus Prime. Prime Bomb!
