Ideas
Giveaways / swag
Any ideas on giveaways? Perhaps this could be an occasion to produce some Wikipedia pens, lanyards, buttons/pins, stickers, etc and send them to meetups. Buttons are a great way for Wikipedians to show that they identify with the project. (And WMF can use this as a small gesture that they appreciate volunteer work ;)) --Tobias 21:59, 10 November 2010 (UTC)

- I believe so, from what Steven posted on outreachwiki, here. Killiondude 06:49, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
- I hope that by that time issues with chapters "selling" merchandising will be solved. As far as I know at least WMFR and WMI are involved in this. Elitre 21:17, 16 November 2011 (UTC)

Video conference
It has been suggested to hold a video conference with different Wikipedia meetups from all over the world. Are there any free/cheap video conference systems, which (preferably) are free software? --Tobias 22:03, 10 November 2010 (UTC)
- Not sure about video conferencing but just saw http://bigbluebutton.org/overview - which is a collaborative online space, using open source components. It might be good because it also has text and a shared document, etc? --Heather (sorry not sure how to add timestamp, it's 11 Nov.)

Quiz
Make a quiz for the attendees using this software in a laptop in a stand. If the person replies correctly to 2-3 questions about Wiki[mp]edia projects, she wins a gift (a wiki-pen, a t-shirt, etc). We need to change the background and the questions/answers. This software comes from Guadalinex events, a GNU/Linux distribution form Andalusia, Spain. People enjoy it so much. Wikipedians obviously will reply correctly to all the questions, so, this is focused in non-wikipedians attendees. Emijrp 19:42, 16 November 2010 (UTC)
- If you want to test the code, do
svn co http://forja.guadalinex.org/svn/guadaquiz/
. Then, double clic in guadaquiz2. If you want to exit, press left & right mouse buttons at the same time, or the center button. This only works in Linux. Emijrp 19:58, 16 November 2010 (UTC)
Broader context and next 10 years
It would be nice to look at Wikipedia "in context" over the last ten years, i.e., a short summary of the last ten years on Earth, with Wikipedia at the center :)
I partly mention this as a way of introducing a book chapter that I recently wrote that deals, in part, with the past ten years of PlanetMath.org (which I like to think of as a synergistic project with Wikipedia :)), and also with the much younger P2PU.org. It's here: Crowdsourcing Education: A Role-Based Analysis (this is a preprint in .doc format). At times like this it is quite exciting to think about the "next ten years" -- a decade that I personally feel will be strongly shaped by the Wikimedia Foundation's mission statement. Arided 23:49, 16 November 2010 (UTC)
- Over the last years lots of users have been apart of our family and we would like you to be too ! - Thank You ! Str8Aundria
Boston/Cambridge
I don't have the time or resources to organize a meetup, but it seems that there is a large number of Wikipedians in the area, as evidenced by the frequent messages that I get on my watchlist page about meetings. Anyone know who is active in Boston/Cambridge? Sven Manguard 02:53, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
- I will definitely try to reach out soon to meetup groups like those in Boston/Cambridge. Good idea. Steven Walling at work 16:26, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
Sitenotice
Can these events be announced in the sitenotice, detecting the country/area of the reader? Perhaps, before that, we can promote the creation of these events showing a banner only for registered users. Emijrp 15:04, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
- Both of those things are definitely in the plan, though we may target non-registered users with anniversary-themed banners as part of the fundraiser as well. Perhaps we should craft messages for the sitenotices/event promotion here? Steven Walling at work 16:25, 18 November 2010 (UTC)

Birthday cake
Perhaps all events could have a birthday cake for Wikipedia with his logo, and they could sing "Happy birthday" to Wikipedia, and they could blow up ten candles :). They could share then the birthday cake with all presents. Bye, --Elisardojm 14:00, 20 November 2010 (UTC)

Yeah Wiki cake Is a good idea :)
What about sponsoring events?
People that organize that events, could look up entities that sponsor the event to get a little budget?. The budget would serve to buy merchandising of wikimedia to give it away to the attendees to the event, to buy different materials necessary to the event and other expenses. Bye, --Elisardojm 14:07, 20 November 2010 (UTC)
- If your country does not have a chapter, I think you may ask WMF for funds. Try and e-mail Steven. Or, you may ask local authorities to be patrons of the event (your municipality, or regional government and so on). Elitre 20:28, 18 December 2010 (UTC)

Since the information of Hong Kong Spring meetup is unclear, and WMHK will hold a activity (no information is release now), the activity in Hong Kong is cancelled. Please wait for the news update by WMHK or User:Yuyu, WMHK board.-HW (Talk - Home wiki) 02:09, 27 November 2010 (UTC)
Skype
Would it make sense to have a Skype conference call open for that day, that way lots of editors could participate even if they live far from the big cities? If so you might be able to get meetings joining in - London is due to have our 41st meetup on the 9th but we are considering shifting it to the 15th and if so we could probably join the Skype chat for a while. WereSpielChequers 17:49, 28 November 2010 (UTC)
- We'd thought about that, but due to the time zones and the huge variety in the size/kind of events happening, we've pretty much scrapped the idea of coordinating one, at least through the WMF. There are some groups, such as Barcelona, doing coordinated editing campaigns from multiple locales though. Steven Walling at work 19:50, 29 November 2010 (UTC)
- Why shouldn't the individual events not try to hook up individually. I have set up a planning table as a sortable list here. If those events that want to hook up via Skype list themselves there with the starting and finishing times of their event, each event can check out which other event would be online at the same time and than can dial up that event individually. This way we can pass on our greetings from East to West as the Wikipedia Globe rolls belows us and meet up with intereting and curious people along the way. Just add your event to the list and do the sorting later. --Wuselig 15:13, 13 December 2010 (UTC)

An challenge-honor
Hello, in the Galician wiki have thought to do a challenge in honor to the Wikipedia. The idea is to do an open announcement to the people so that the day 15 do the main number of possible editions to try achieve the 5.000 editions. This would be a milestone in our project since the average is in 1.200 daily editions, this form this tribute would remain marked in the history of our wiki. Previously, we will do a workshop about wiki edition and afterwards will continue editing to try surpass the challenge.
It would help us know, at least each hour, the number of editions realised in the wiki to go controlling the advance of the challenge, somebody knows some tool that provide us this information?. We only have been able to find things like this but does not help us since it only gives information at the end of the day.

Wikipe-tan turns 10. Image Attached
Are there currently any plans to include Wikipe-tan in the 10-year birthday celebration? I could totally see her friends throwing a surprise birthday party with the balloons, cake, silverware, and presents being various incarnations of the 10 year anniversary logo, but at the moment I do not even see her being included in the planning. Just something to think about, especially with the growing number of anime and manga fans out there... TomStar81 23:22, 21 December 2010 (UTC)
- Another point of interest: if this idea gets any kind of interest you could include the various operating systems as 'parents' such as it were to show the different systems that have guided user to the net to help build the site. Just another thought. TomStar81 23:34, 21 December 2010 (UTC)
- She was originally drawn in 2006 (IIRC), and she very much appeared 5 in the original drawing, so could someone find a Manga artist to draw an updated look of how Wikipe-tan would appear at 10 years old? --64.216.111.57 09:55, 1 January 2011 (UTC)
- Update: I think I found a drawing of her looking a little older. She could pass for 10 on this picture:

Wikipedia Comes to your door!
I know at-least 5-10 colleges with more than 500 technical and graduate student strength here in Bangalore, Karnataka, India and most of the Bangalorean online users are hard core Wikipedia Fans! Why can't we reach out to them to announce TEN. But I think we need to give away T-Shirts, Caps, Pens etc., to create the awareness that "All of us can contribute to the largest-free-online-easy-to-access-ad-free-non-profit ENCYCLOPEDIA (Ok, that word is outdated :) ENCYCLOPEDIA is no more- It's Wikipedia)"
I have joined the Bangalore organizers mailing list. Waiting for some response from somebody!
- Thank you for your interest. Please post on the India list or on the Ten Anniversary India coordination page with your contact details. Someone from the team will surely respond. regards Arunram 06:36, 2 January 2011 (UTC)
Ugh shoot me, but merchandizing?
To increase discussion IRL, shirts, sweatshirts, the like with Wikipedia logo and/or username on front, on back "give back" or somesuch. Might lessen donation duration, and be fun. 'Why I Contribute' audio recording
I got back into editing (en) Wikipedia again recently. One thing that constantly astounds me about it is the sheer size of the project infrastructure: all the WikiProjects ande behind-the-scenes admin. Patrollers, the whole AfD crew, policy wonks and so on. If you do New Page Patrol for a few days, you get to see how enormous Wikipedia really is. People building elaborate scripts to produce tables and templates for sports leagues and so on.
The idea then is to document a cross-section of this. A list of questions or prompts would be constructed and Wikipedians would be invited to record some audio answering them. They would send the audio in, and then the most interesting bits would be picked out and turned into an audio documentary.
Here's a few rough questions that they could answer:
- What got you into editing Wikipedia in the first place?
- What sort of things do you do?
- Is there anything you do as a Wikipedia editor that the average Wikipedia reader wouldn't really know about?
- What's the strangest article you've edited or argument you've had on Wikipedia?
- Is it all worth it?
In addition, contributors could record some little blips that could be used at the beginning and end of the documentary (maybe "Happy birthday Wikipedia!" and "I'm (name) and I edit Wikipedia."
What's the value of this then? There's a few things.
- It'd be fun. People would get an interesting, funny, enlightening view of what their fellow Wikipedians are doing.
- It could be used as outreach, perhaps to supplement the Wikimedia Outreach Bookshelf Project.
- The clips could be reused (they'd be on Commons under a free license, of course) for other projects.
- It may help readers become editors, and maybe get people to care about Wikipedia enough to contribute to WMF during the next donations drive.
- It would serve as a sort of time capsule of what it is like to help write Wikipedia ten years in.
Does that sound like a good idea? —Tom Morris 10:41, 3 January 2011 (UTC)
- I like it, but it looks difficult to realise… Savh 16:20, 3 January 2011 (UTC)
- Not necessarily. You'd need about two or three people to come up with the questions and send them out to people. You'd need a group of people to sort the submissions. And you'd need someone to edit them all into one piece. People could record the interviews at the IRL tenth anniversary meetups too. —Tom Morris 03:54, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

Меню без конструктора
Sorry, I almost cannot speak and write English. I will write almost only in Russian.
Моя идея: Упростить ввод ссылок и шаблонов без использования конструктора:
Example: /

- Luc, someone had already thought about it. Such a banner was meant to show up on all the wikis toward the end of this fundraising. Attention, Event Holders!
The Department of Fun at the English Wikipedia has been working very hard on developing a unique trading card game based on the English Wikipedia. The profits (beyond production) will benefit Wikimedia, as we'd like to continue the non-profit tradition.
We'd like to thank all the Wikipedians in the world (and the Wikipedia fans) who have helped make Wikipedia worthy of its own trading card game, so we're offering a free promotional trading card to everyone. Unfortunately, since the game is still under development, we're only able to offer a coupon at the moment which can be redeemed after the game's release (which might easily be a few years from now). We encourage all event leaders to download and print several copies to distribute at your events. Thanks, Event Leaders, and happy anniversary, Wikipedia!

Page Visits
Thanks for the great work.
I think it would be better to include the number of page visits to a particular page. It would better be on the extreme left to the title of the page. for ex: I am seeing black book (film) the page goes
Black Book ............... ..............
I ask it to be as Black book xxxxxxxxvisits
Another small suggestion is to display the potential of wikipedia by displaying the visits on a per day basis, no: of users online(I think it would do good on below the "Donate to Wikipedia" on the left side ) on the main page, followed by a link to apage including that day's stats
thank you

For the wikifans....
As wikipedia celebrates its 10 years of success and fame all around the world... why not make it special for its own fans. Let wikipedia promote itself by giving new naming nomenclature to its members/fans such as "wikipedes" or "wikiplorers". It would be great if promo t-shirts ( labelled - "ru wikimaniac", "i m wikidelic" or "i m a wikifan")are distributed just for promulgation...
- If you do that, I'll insist you spell it and use proper punctuation, as we do here at Wikipedia. Wikipedia's not a phone, nor should it be edited with one. Bob the Wikipedian (talk • contribs) 19:16, 9 January 2011 (UTC)
Spread the news to the youths!
Users like me use Wikipedia for anything and everything! But I was not aware of the 10th anniversary!and hearty congratulations 'Wiki'!.I think the team could scoot to various schools and colleges and bring in a lot of youth!Visit colleges and get the students to gather ideas and the event will rock!!
People could be asked to come up with wiki-songs,wiki-poems,wiki-times(their experiences with wikipedia),wiki-future(how they want wikipedia to look in the future),wiki-thanks(how the participants would like to thank wikipedia!).This could be organised as events and the best of those could be awarded!
It's another year of continuous knowledge for me. Wikipedia answers every questions that i need to give an answer. Happy anniversary Wikipedia!!! More power and keep the world educated.

how to spread wikipedia mania world wide in Wikipedia 10 event
I suggest that Wikipedia should go to each and every school in the world and inculcate among all students of all ages the habit to approach Wikipedia in their respective languages to gather any sort of information that is useful to them in their educational ,cultural and moral development. All students should be given a unique Identity Number and those students who make maximum use of Wikipedia in a given academic session should be honoured by giving special prizes to such students at Special Functions to be organised by respective countries under the guidance of Wikipedia head quarters /regional head quarters.

New Design
I think the Wikipedia page should have a makeover and children that are eleven like myself should be able to sign up to Wikipedia.
Launch of Personal Observed Data/Citizen Scientist Wiki
It's time for wikipedia to open itself to a new user dynamic, from the systematic storage of available information to the processing and storage of novel, observed information... (hidden text)

GLOBAL PINOY SOLUTION TO CELEBRATE WITH FREE I.T. TRAINING
We congratulate WIKEPEDIA on its 10th Year Anniversary! Global Pinoy Solution, a group of Filipinos that advocates to inculcate continuous learning and promote I.T. Literacy to fellow Overseas Migrant Workers, would like to participate in celebrating the tenth year anniversary by mentioning Wikepedia as a resource medium in our Free I.T. Training here in Al-Khobar, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Please allow us to use Wikipedia Logo for graphic presentation and promotion in our slide and our website as well (www.globalpinoysolution.com). We are planning to have a link on Wikepedia because it will help our participants to understand more the intricacies of information technology. We are open to help spread the "sum of all knowledge" in our own little way. Then again, congratulations and more power to Wikepedia Team!

The year of the Encyclopedia-2011
In 2011 we celebrate 10 years of encyclopedic revolution in the 21st century. The emergence of the collective networked encyclopedia which in the name of Wikipedia opened a new dimension in our cultural space. Where human knowledge is organized for the commons by the commons themselves. We also celebrate 260 years of the "Encyclopédie", the radical idea of Diderot and d'Alembert, the collective work that promised to change the way people think and created the dream that "At least one day this work could take the place of a library of all types of knowledge... and by multiplying the number of true scholars, distinguished artisans, and enlighted amateurs, it will contribute new advances to the society as a whole..."
This day has come.Today all we feel the multiplying effect of Wikipedia, the open, collective encyclopedia. We feel and use the creative work of the hundreds of thousands of enlighted amateurs that all around the world edit and evolve the encyclopedia. They are everywhere among us, writing for the encyclopedia in all languages. So proudly we hail them! And we all the Friends of the Encyclopedia, are calling the scholars, artisans, educators, scientists and amateurs all around our cosmos to contribute in the enrichment of Wikipedia and to spread its use in our society.
Lets make 2011-The year of the Encyclopedia- in every country!
- You might reach schools yourself using bookshelf materials from Outreach wiki, in the meantime. Elitre 10:17, 13 January 2011 (UTC)
- Sorry, I'm responding in English because I don't know your language. Simple: is a good version of Wikipedia for younger students, and for people who don't know English very well. In fact, I find it's helpful when I need to look up something where the article on en: is way too technical. Bob the Wikipedian (talk • contribs) 07:21, 14 January 2011 (UTC)
buy Time Capsules
Buy Time Capsules for the 10th anniversary. Send them to locations around the world to collect physical momentos. Have them sent back to Wikipedia headquarters in the US. Open them in 10 years to see what was of interest in the "physical" world as part of the 20 year celebration.
- Very interesting. Instead of real time capsules, we can open a wiki page to write thoughts, wishes, ideas about how will be the future of Wikipedia. We can protect that page, and re-read it in 2021 to see how Wikipedia has changed. Emijrp 20:51, 12 January 2011 (UTC)
- Time capsule needs to be publicized more! Utcursch 02:10, 15 January 2011 (UTC)
Youtube
One thing that I noticed people do, is celebrate on Youtube. Wikipedia can make an "official" Wikipedia 10th Anniversary video, and everyone can watch it, subscribe it, and comment, and hopefully win a Youtube award,(i.e. "most subbed", "most liked"', etc.)
- The videos are already on Vimeo and Commons. On Youtube: [3], [4]. Elitre 20:44, 12 January 2011 (UTC)
- I agree! We should create a YouTube Account for Wikipedia, download all of the WIKI 10 vids from all over the world, and get people to subscribe and pass it on! GENIUS!!! (Never would have thought of it either...) ->Mastercodex199< at 20:46, January 12, 2011
language
Dear Wikipedia family,
- Heartiest congratulations on 10th anniversary of Wikipedia. i am wondering if you can add Punjabi (Gurmukhi) language in your family. You are giving important information regarding Punjabi(Gurmukhi) but we can not read in Punjabi (Gurmukhi). So the whole punjabi family from all over the world will be thankful to Wikipedia.
- You need to check meta:Requests_for_new_languages for that. Elitre 10:18, 13 January 2011 (UTC)

Grow Up?
How about for wikipedia's anniversary, it could stop acting like a Jerry Lewis telethon for five minutes - stop begging for donations, stop asking for ideas and just act like a resource for a change. This is getting ridiculous.
- Well, without "begging", this very Wikipedia 10 website would not have existed. However, banners are now thanking people, encouraging participation o reminding of WP10 events, and they'll be down very soon. Elitre 09:48, 13 January 2011 (UTC)
- Every nonprofit I've known asks for money at least once a year. I agree, Wikimedia's pledge drive this season was far more disruptive than usual, but at least it was disruptive enough to make me grab my wallet and see what I could do. Can we do better in the future at not annoying people so much? Perhaps. I think that we should learn from this negative reception of this year's pledge drive and let the feedback shape future ones. Main Page Slideshow
Thanks to motivation from Jimbo and the wonderful screen captures by Erik Zachte, we've got a nice slideshow of screenshots of the main page in various languages.
If anyone would like to display this slideshow, we've got several options for you. Before displaying it, I advise you run through it and make sure a slide with your event's native language appears in it. If not, you'll need to add that in there yourself.

- Shouldn't this go somewhere else (Share maybe)? Elitre 07:32, 14 January 2011 (UTC)
- I dunno; I'm still figuring out this site's layout. I won't stop you from putting it there. This just seems to be the page where people seem to be conversing; Share is probably not on anyone's watchlist since it seems to just be a guide for coming up with neat things to talk about. National Wikipedia editing day
I sit in an NGO that teaches over 50s to get on the net. We have 116 clubs. Whatabout a national day in the Autumn to edit and set in new articles? We are Norwegian. We are a little language, and need more articles, we have women and we have the elderly. Any ideas on how we can teach them editing? We are willing to test out new software as well
- I know that the Swiss chapter (and maybe also the German one in the past) have a program like the one you are looking for, see Local chapters. Elitre 12:51, 17 January 2011 (UTC)
holding wikipedia events in the East Midlands
Hi i would like it if wikipedia events could be held in the East Midlands or derbyshire because i live in derby and it is too far away for me to attend the London and Bristol events. - Jessa90
- Are you willing to organize them too? Elitre 12:52, 17 January 2011 (UTC)
Wikipedia e Twitter
Sarebbe bello se Wikipedia avesse dei collegamenti con Twitter in modo che gli utenti possano postare quello che desiderano: spero che questa idea si possa realizzare presto.
Grazie Wikipedia!

Media articles
Hi. Is there a page anywhere that lists and links to various newspaper and media articles about the 10th anniversary? Thanx. - 98.176.37.180 11:02, 17 January 2011 (UTC)
Communicator setup
A communicator/chat room based on different areas should be setup for the wikipedians for the worldwide knowledge sharing.
