Proto:WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$!
This page details one or more prototype versions of WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$!.
To do: Look at the demos in Gekkan Nintendo Tentou Demo 2003.3.1 and Gekkan Nintendo Tentou Demo 2003.5.1. The Spriters Resource has a sheet of the special "CM" sprites from what they list as the 2003.3.1 demo. |
A number of microgame demos were released: eight as unlockables in Wario World, and one as part of the Nintendo GameCube Preview Disc. All of them are downloadable to a Game Boy Advance.
These trials have a number of differences from the final game, most likely due to needing to fit within the GBA's 256kb of RAM.

General
- The screen is always dimmed whenever the game is paused. In the final, the screen is blacked out completely if the game is paused during a microgame.
- Dodge Balls, Repellion, and Munch a Bunch, when played via the standalone demos in Wario World, have extra difficulty levels not used in the final:
- Dodge Balls can go as high as Level 6, where there are 7 balls to avoid.
- Repellion can go as high as Level 10, where there are 10 UFOs to shoot.
- Munch a Bunch can go as high as Level 7, where there are 24 shapes to eat.
Unused Levels
- The coding for Dodge Balls, Repellion and Munch a Bunch in their trial demos can also support the higher levels where they are unused.
- While Dodge Balls can go up to Level 6 in the Selected 1 demo, the microgame (in both the trial 1 and selected 1 demos) can actually handle levels 7, 8 and 9 where up to 10 balls can be spawned. Any higher levels will result in corrupt graphics, and then a crash.
- Levels 4 to 9 are also accessible in the final game.
- The coding for Repellion and Munch a Bunch, on the other hand, do not support any higher levels.
Graphical Differences
Microgames
- Wario in Crazy Cars has no idle animation.
- The instruction in Crazy Cars does not become "Dodge?" in situations where the car either drives away from Wario or is tiny.
- The background in Wario Whirled is pure black instead of a very dark green.
- The ball won't "break" the screen if you don't catch it in Heads Up.
Boom Box
Demos | Final |
---|---|
A few areas have less shading, like the screen and bars at the top. The outline for the screen on the boombox is also a dark grey rather than a lighter color based/dependent on what color the screen itself is (cyan, yellow, red). This was not changed for the final's start-up sequence.
Transition
Demos | Final |
---|---|
The transitions into and out of microgames use four frames of animation (the final uses eight) and have no dissolve effect on Wario's nose.
"CM" Mode
After reaching a score of 21 in the GameCube Preview Disc trial, the screen on the boombox will say "CM" (likely standing for "commercial") and all of the available Introduction microgames will play, except the graphics and commands are changed to advertise the game.
Normal | "CM" Mode |
---|---|
Audio Differences
All of the audio uses a different soundfont, again likely due to the 256kb size restriction. Compared to the final, the audio used here ranges from identical to completely different.
The Preview Disc demo and Wario World demos have the exact same set of audio files.
