Explore innovative approaches to networked archives, exciting archival practices in roundtable discussions, live podcast recordings and hands-on workshops. 🟡 Syrian Design Archive: Collaging History Join this cut-n-paste and collaging workshop where you can remix archival materials and learn about experimental typography and design from the Syrian diaspora. The Syrian Design Archive is a non-profit, community-sourced documentary project founded by Kinda Ghannoum, Hala Al Afsaa and sally alassafen. Makers Unravel: Series of conversation where makers of design, archives, visual arts, music, movement, craft, narratives, and mesh-ups share their approach, philosophy, and processes of creating. An intimate sharing session with the team of Syrian Design Archive, Kinda Ghannoum, Sally Alassafen, and Hala Al Afsaa Date: 5pm, Sunday, 12 May 2024 Venue: Malaysia Design Archive, The Zhongshan Building The Syrian Design Archive initiated by Kinda Ghannoum, Sally Alassafen, and Hala Al Afsaa, documents and preserves Syria's graphic design heritage. This not-for-profit project has gathered a diverse collection of Syrian design elements, from street signs to stamps and explores Arabic typography. The archive aims to educate and share the rich visual history of Syrian design, previously undocumented and inaccessible, unravelling the creatives and designers behind it, sharing it with a global audience. Kinda Ghannoum is a Syrian-Polish designer Her work focuses on developing branding identities, typography, & Research, transitioned from architecture to graphic design to pursue her passion for visual storytelling. Co-founder of the Syrian Design Archive a non-profit documentary project, which archives examples of Arabic typography and graphic design. Her creative journey is deeply rooted in Arabic & Islamic art, which significantly influences her work. Celebrating her cultural heritage, Ghannoum’s designs are characterized by incorporating Arabic typography and patterns, offering a fresh perspective to the global design community and gaining recognition and appreciation for Arab art and design. Instagram handle: @kindaghannoum Hala Al Afsaa is a Syrian designer who majored in architecture, she changed her path from architecture towards a visual communication and graphic design career, having a deep interest in Arabic typography, illustration, and exploratory research projects on collective things that make us human, and a Co-founder of the Syrian Design Archive a non-profit documentary project, which archives examples of Arabic typography and graphic design. Currently pursuing her master's degree in visual communication and media studies in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Instagram handle: @hala_alafsaa Sally Alassafen is an architect based in the Netherlands. This season’s series is curated by Associate Professor Anastasiia Raina and kicks off this Monday, March 18th with @iman.raad, who will be visiting RISD in-person from NYC at 5PM in the GD Commons.
