Manage Numbers templates on Mac
If you create a spreadsheet that you want to use again as a model for other spreadsheets, you can save it as a template. Creating your own template can be as simple as adding your company logo to an existing template, or you can design a completely new template.
You can add your custom templates to the template chooser, save them as a file to share with others, and use them in Numbers on your Mac, iPhone or iPad. Custom templates you create on your Mac are grouped in the My Templates category of the template chooser and are shared across all your devices.
Save a spreadsheet as a template
If you’re signed in to the same Apple Account on all your devices and have iCloud Drive turned on when you save your custom template, it’s available on all your devices (but not in Numbers for iCloud).
Go to the Numbers app on your Mac.
Open a spreadsheet.
Choose File > Save as Template (from the File menu at the top of your screen).
Click an option:
Add to Template Chooser: Type a name for the template, then click Choose.
Save: Type a name for the template, then choose where you want to save it.
If you want to email the template to others or to yourself, save it to your computer. You can attach the file to an email message.
Install a template from another source on your Mac
You can install a custom template you received as an attachment by adding it to the template chooser in Numbers.
Double-click the template file (it has the file extension “.nmbtemplate”), then click Add to Template Chooser.
Note: The template is already installed on all your devices and available in the My Templates category of the template chooser if you chose Add to Template Chooser when you create the template (and are using iCloud Drive while signed in to the same Apple Account).
You can set Numbers to open new spreadsheets from a specific template instead of from the template chooser.
Edit a custom template
Go to the Numbers app on your Mac.
Choose File > New (from the File menu at the top of your screen), then double-click the template you want to edit.
Custom templates appear in the My Templates category of the template chooser. If you want to use a custom template that doesn’t appear there, you must first install the custom template (see the instructions above).
Make your changes, choose File > Save as Template, then choose an option to save the spreadsheet as a new template.
The edited template is saved as a new version. You can rename the new version and delete the first version if you don’t want to keep it.
Rename or delete a custom template
If you’re signed in to the same Apple Account on all your devices and have iCloud Drive turned on, deleting a custom template deletes it from all your devices.
Go to the Numbers app on your Mac.
In the theme chooser, Control-click the template name, then choose Rename or Delete.
If you’re renaming, type a new name, then press Return.
Custom templates always appear in My Templates in the template chooser. You can’t rearrange templates, and you can’t delete templates that came with Numbers.
