Plan and share a route on your Mac
Before a big trip, you can plan your route on your Mac and then share the details to another device (iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch). You must be signed in to the same Apple Account on your device and your Mac.
Plan a route
Go to the Maps app on your Mac.
Click a location on the map, such as an intersection, landmark or business.
In the place card, do one of the following:
Get directions to this location: Click Directions.
Create a route from this location: Click Create Route, then enter the destination in the To field.
Click or button, then do any of the following (if needed):
If you’re driving: Plan a route with multiple stops. Click Add Stop and choose another location. Drag next to a location to rearrange stops.
If you’re taking public transportation: View the fare next to the route (if available).
Click Plan.
Select Leave to choose when you want to leave your starting point or Arrive to choose when you want to reach your destination.
Click the date to enter a new date.
Click the time to enter when you plan to leave or want to arrive.
Click Options, then choose any of the following:
If you’re driving: Choose to avoid tolls and motorways.
If you’re taking public transportation: Choose your preferred public transport options, such as bus or ferry.
Predict travel time
You can see how long it may take to reach a destination when following a suggested set of directions. When you’re driving or taking public transport, Maps bases the prediction on traffic patterns, and you can see how the travel time changes depending on when you plan to leave.
Go to the Maps app on your Mac.
Search for a location you want to go to, click a result, then click Directions.
If you’re driving or taking public transport, the time to your destination is based on current traffic conditions.
To see how long it may take you to travel later, click Plan, click “Leave at” or “Arrive by”, enter a date and time, then click Apply.
The time to your destination is calculated according to typical, expected traffic patterns.
If you have an iPhone, you can share your ETA as you travel. See Estimate your travel and arrival time in the iPhone User Guide (also available while using iPad models with Wi-Fi Mobile Data).
Share directions to your iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch
You can send directions or a location to your other devices. (You must be signed in to the same Apple Account on both your device and your Mac.)
Note: You can only share driving routes that don’t contain multiple stops.
Go to the Maps app on your Mac.
Click a location on the map, click Directions, then make any adjustments you want.
Do one of the following:
Go to the Maps app on iPhone or iPad (iOS 16, iPadOS 16 or later), scroll down the card to Recents, then tap the route.
See “Get travel directions” in the iPhone User Guide or iPad User Guide.
Click in the toolbar, choose the device you want to send directions to, then open the Maps app on your device to view the directions.
