Need New Image?[edit source]

I uploaded an image for the PC version of Dogz (Image:Dogz Main Menu.jpg) but the thing is, the dog shown on there is my German Shepherd called Bengi, and I bought him a Dalmatian fur pattern. I was wandering if I should re-upload the image with one of the available breeds (probably a pug called Rainbow) since people might get confused as you can't get dalmatians in this game! --Melon247 18:51, 25 December 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I think it's fine how it is. You explain everything in the page, which is what people need to know. You might want to put in somewhere in the guide how you go about buying different patterns. Do you mean you bought it in the game, or you bought downloadable content for real money? - najzere 17:59, 26 December 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I bought it in the game, there is a store where you can buy stuff including fur patterns. You can even make your dog look like a robot! I'll probably re-upload the image anyway because I've redone the page which I saved in my documents. --Melon247 18:07, 26 December 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Different console buttons[edit source]

How do you get those things where you have a thing in the top right of the page, where you select a platform, and then it changes all the buttons on the page to whatever button you have? I know it involves putting '{{}}' around the options or something. I remember I saw it in a few guides but I can't remember which they were. --Melon247 17:40, 26 December 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

You do it by adding {{Control selector|PlayStation 2, Wii}} to the top of a page (Under the Header Nav). Whenever you come to a place where you need to add a button, you would add {{control|{{psx|X}}|{{wii|1}}}} to the page. That would mean that in the list, if you selected the PlayStation it would display {{psx|X}} and if you were on the Wii, it would display {{wii|1}}. One example of this is here. f you need this explaining further then feel free to ask.--The preceding signed comment was added by Rocky (talkcontribs). 17:49, 26 December 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I redid the controls page for Petz: Dogz 2 and Catz 2, but there was something I just realised and that is that different buttons do interact. What I mean is, on the PS2 interact is the same button as barking or screeching, whereas on the Wii interact is the same button as the Whiskers Radar and Sniffing. Is there a way of making the sentences change for different platforms? --Melon247 18:05, 26 December 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes, anything you put in the {{control}} template will change, it doesn't have to be just buttons. - najzere 18:06, 26 December 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

registered users[edit source]

I just thought of something- when you put a register template on an anon's talk page, is there a way of knowing they haven't already registered? I remember once I created a redirect page when it wouldn't let me sign in, but when I went to the contributions page for what the anon of me had done it just said that one thing, not showing that I was a registered user anyway. I was just wandering, considering there's always lots of new uswers on this site, and I don't know how to tell if they've done stuff as anons or not, so there might be an anon who's registered and then they recieve a register template and get really confused. --Melon247 11:02, 28 December 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Only bureaucrats have the ability to connect user names to IP addresses, however they use this ability rarely, as it would be a breach of privacy on their part. When you post the template, your signature will remind them when the message was posted, so all they have to do is remember when they registered (or check the logs). It's not an issue. I have done a lot of work anonymously simply because I don't want to log in from a public location. It's better to ignore anonymous edits than worry about connecting them to their registered user name. --Notmyhandle (talk contribs) 20:28, 28 December 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thank Yous?[edit source]

So, let me gt this straight, only admins can give thank yous to other users? I was thinking that there was a certain user (not saying who) who I want to give a thank you for something but I don't know if it's the most important thing ever. It's just been bugging me for a while. --Melon247 18:12, 29 December 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

You can thank anyone you want. It doesn't have to be an admin at all.--DukeRuckleyTalk | Contribs 18:20, 29 December 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Who gave you that impression? --Notmyhandle (talk contribs) 07:35, 30 December 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Procyon once told me that thank yous were best left to sysops, so I just imagined that meant that they were the only ones who could do them. --Melon247 09:23, 30 December 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Contrib Numbers[edit source]

Is there a template or something that automatically generayes the number of contributions? It's just I have that number of edits thing on my user page and I was wondering if there was an easier way that just changing it all the time. --Melon247 18:12, 1 January 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

No, there isn't. Also, ask stuff in the staff lounge or forums instead of on your talk page. --Skizzerz 18:41, 1 January 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Oh, OK. It's just easier asking stuff on your talk page because then you know if you've had a response the moment you go to strategywiki. But then I guess it isn't easier for you lot to answer the questions! --Melon247 09:36, 2 January 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Dogz enemy template[edit source]

Dogz enemy - najzere 18:13, 14 January 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thank you! Brilliant explanation you came up with! : ). Oh, and thanks for the sig suggestions you gave me in my sandbox! I'll probably use one of them in, like, special things. Like important conversations and stuff like that. Thanks again! --Melon247 09:23, 15 January 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Is there a way of making the table of contents skip to the template, raher than having the heading saying 'green snake' and then just under it the title saying 'green snake'. Just if I took the heading out then there wouldn't be a way of getting right to that enemy. --Melon247 09:45, 15 January 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Yeah, you can link to the template, like this. The problem is that the ToC won't automatically generate if you don't put any headings in. I guess it depends on how many enemies are going to be on the page. If it's like Dog Island, you're probably better off just using the regular headings and then formatting the rest of the content to look like whichever of those mockups you like. - najzere 16:14, 15 January 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Copyedit for Petz[edit source]

Thats what I'm here for :3

I'm almost done importing a few things from Wikipedia so I will get to proof reading the guide once that's done. --Zaiqukaj 10:37, 17 January 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thanks! I've decided that I am also going to take up copyediting and spell checking, but I can't really copyedit my own writing. --Melon247 10:40, 17 January 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thats fine, we all miss things sometimes. So far everything looks great. Please take a look at the tiny changes I made to Petz: Dogz 2 and Catz 2/Getting Started (and do change back anything you don't like, all I did was edit emphasis and add a link). If I can't find any ways to improve or fix the writing I look for ways to improve the formatting. I find specific word instructions or things that need emphasis (or even little notes) look more punchy bold or italicized instead of 'tiny quoted' or, my nemesis, ALL CAPPED. It's just something to think about. Once I get your input on the changes to getting started I will finish checking everything. --Zaiqukaj 11:25, 17 January 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Your changes to the Getting Started pages were OK, if that's what you wanted to know. Great empha thingys! I'll probably have a look on the copyediting category and see if I can find something to do. --Melon247 14:44, 17 January 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Deleting Pages[edit source]

If I add the delete template to a page, no one seems to notice it. I remember someone saying to another user to notify an admin or something so they can delete it, but I can hardly notify them for every vandal page there is! And considering that someone is probably reading this now who is an admin, I also put the info from Animal Crossing: Wild World/Random tips into the rest on the Animal Crossing: Wild World guide so we can delete the random tips page now. --Melon247 18:01, 18 January 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

No need to rush a page deletion without a very good reason. They'll all be seen and taken care of eventually. It also gives people a chance to refute the deletion. -- Prod (Talk) 05:44, 19 January 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Dogz 2[edit source]

Couple questions:

  1. On this page I have a question about "Gurtrude." First of all, is that how it's spelled in the game? The normal spelling is Gertrude. Second, is it really a guy? Gertrude is normally a woman's name. Same with Stanly - the normal spelling is Stanley.
  2. On the Saving Saul mission, what are pursuit whiskers and what is the Dogz corollary?

- najzere 19:47, 21 January 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

It's probably spelt Gertrude in the game. I've been trying to find out if 'he' is male or female but everyone seems to just call him Gertrude, and I though it was a male name so it could just be my mistake.
Pursuit Whiskers is like Track and Sniff in The Dog Island, where you use your Whiskers Radar (the same as sniffing) and a pawprint track comes up. And with the colouring, each accessory has lots of colours which you can choose from in the Fashion House. I'll probably add something about that to Sheila on the Characters page or something. I also need to add that in the Saving Saul mission you don't have to find his meat/fish as I forgot to do it last time I played and found it a few missions later, but Saul disappears after his rescue mission so I got some free food! --Melon247 14:02, 22 January 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I forgot to mention this before, but Stanly is spelt Stanley in the game. Something odd I found that I'll probably need to check is that in Dogz there is 'Marin' but in Catz she seems to be called 'Maria'. I'm pretty sure that Gurtrude is female so in the game I'm currently playing I dressed her up in a fancy hat and pink glasses so I wouldn't forget! --Melon247 16:54, 23 January 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Cleaning up pages[edit source]

I've been looking in the cleanup category for stuff to do to cleanup some pages (and improve my chances of adminship!) but I'm not really sure how to do cleanup. Ok, so obviously you need to clean stuff up but I'm not really sure what to be looking out for. --Melon247 17:56, 28 January 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

There are a couple of things to consider:
  1. Make sure everything is in wiki-syntax.
  2. Make sure the page looks nice (makes good use of headers/bold/italics/sidebars/etc.)
  3. Make sure there is no drivel
  4. Clean up and spelling mistakes and grammar mistakes
  5. Proper use of infoboxes, headers and footers
There's more to it, but that's a good starting point.--DukeRuckleyTalk | Contribs 18:10, 28 January 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]
ok, not I know what I'm looking for! P.S. I'm getting really close to 2000 edits now (12 to go!) not that it's got anything to do with what we were talking about. --Melon247 18:29, 28 January 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hey, keep in mind that there are differences between American English and British English. For example, the change you made from "Channeling" to "Channelling" is one such difference. Because the guide was started in American English, it is best to keep the American spelling, so I'm going to revert your edit. Also, it is spelled "Channeling" in-game (I'm not sure if that changes in Europe or not). I made that same mistake, changing some British English into American back when I first started cleaning up some spelling mistakes too!--DukeRuckleyTalk | Contribs 14:45, 30 January 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Sorry about that. I'm just looking through the spelling mistake page. And I think some people have been making mistakes on that page too (on the search links) because if you search for some of the words, the 'spelling mistakes' page doesn't come up. One I remember was apparently 'useable' but the link searched for 'useble'. --Melon247 14:48, 30 January 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Here's how the spelling page works... You are supposed to be searching for a mistake, so for example the 'useable' one: "Useble" should be "useable" so when you click the link, it'll search for pages that contain "useble". You then edit the page and change all instances of "useble" to "useable".

Another example: Say "crystal" is spelled as "crystle" fairly often (this is the example you put in). You should be searching for "crystle". That way you can find all the instances of the misspelled word and change it to the correct word. I hope that helps.--DukeRuckleyTalk | Contribs 14:55, 30 January 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

On the page it says 'useable → usable'. But it links to 'Useble'. That's what I'm trying to say. I was just pointing it out. --Melon247 16:56, 30 January 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]
And by the way, is sp just a shortening of spelling mistake or something like that? I'm guessing it is. --Melon247 17:21, 30 January 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I use sp as shorthand for "correct spelling." I see what you were saying about useable, I just misunderstood before. If you come across anything like that, please feel free to correct it.--DukeRuckleyTalk | Contribs 17:40, 30 January 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

If there are differences in American and English spelling, could someone put them in the spelling mistakes page? I don't know about how they spell stuff in different countries. For example, how do they spell 'remodelled' in Ameraca? Because I just went through a page changing the spelling because there's nothing on the mistakes page telling you if there are differences in different countries. If it did say if there were differences, it would be very helpful. --Melon247 10:05, 1 February 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I'm not an expert on the differences between British and American english spelling, but here's a few I do know:
American British Example
-eled, -eling -elled, -elling canceled vs. cancelled
-or -our color vs. colour
-ter -tre center vs. centre
It would be a good idea to compile some of these somewhere.--DukeRuckleyTalk | Contribs 19:10, 16 February 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Game selector[edit source]

I got bored of waiting for someone to create one so I made one myself so someone can edit it. I was wondering how you actually get the template to appear on the screen. Is it something to do with the documentation page?--Melon247 09:14, 4 February 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hey I meant to post on your talk page, but I ended up doing it on my own somehow. Link. - najzere 00:28, 18 February 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Vandal Warnings[edit source]

If I undo some vandalism that's really bad (like using swearwords or rude words) or if someone has just continously been vandalising the site, am I supposed to put some kind of warning on their talk page? Just wondering. --Melon247 19:41, 5 February 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

If it seems like they were just trying to contribute but not intentionally vandalizing, use {{test}}. User {{vandalism warning}} for normal vandalizing and {{vandalism warning 2}} if it occurs again. If the first time they vandalize is something really bad, use {{vandalism only}}. If it persists, please leave a message on a sysops page. If the vandalism is something you feel doesn't fit in those categories, you are welcome to leave a note on their talk page, but be polite and alert them to the proper page for help (such as the guide or staff lounge).--DukeRuckleyTalk | Contribs 20:48, 5 February 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Ok, thanks! Is there, like, a list of templates and stuff for putting on user talk pages? Just so I have some idea and don't have to write everything be hand. --Melon247 17:48, 6 February 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Message templates. Just make sure you understand what they are used for before placing them on a talk page. For example, only sysops should use {{Banned}}.--DukeRuckleyTalk | Contribs 17:55, 6 February 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The Random List[edit source]

Anyone can add themselves to the list of specialities on my user page. This was so people who need help know who to ask, although I doubt that anyone will find it on my user page anyway. So, put your specialities on the list (and tell me if you can think of a name for it that doesn't sound like something to do with cooking). --Melon247 19:40, 16 February 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Image uploads[edit source]

If you're getting an image from a site, put a link to the site in the summary for attribution. Here's an example. - najzere 18:35, 19 February 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

If I'm looking for game covers generally I just look the game up on google. So most of the time I don't make a note of where I get them from. But if it's needed I guess I'll have to put it in. --Melon247 09:30, 20 February 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Where'd you get this one? - najzere 16:00, 20 February 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Gamespot. Fine, I'll add a link. --Melon247 16:57, 20 February 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks! :D - najzere 16:59, 20 February 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]
There's loads of great boxshots on Gamespot but some of the links don't work. But at least there's no gamespot logo on any of then : ) --Melon247 17:04, 20 February 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]
True. I get box art from all over the place, usually I go through a bunch and pick the best one. Great job on adding covers, by the way; main pages just don't look that good without them! - najzere 17:07, 20 February 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Dogz[edit source]

There is some confusion concerning the following guides:

According to the disambiguation links on all three pages, Dogz and Petz: Dogz 2 and Catz 2 (PC) are both the PC version of Petz: Dogz 2 and Catz 2. However, Dogz and Petz: Dogz 2 and Catz 2 (PC) each have their own pages. Which is the PC version of Petz: Dogz 2 and Catz 2? - najzere 10:30, 21 February 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Petz: Dogz 2 and Catz 2 (PC) is the PC version, I think. Personally, I never even knew there was a PC version of it until I saw it on this site. But Dogz isn't the PC version of Petz: Dogz 2. It's the PC version of the UK title for the game because it's called Dogz in the UK. Basically... Dogz and Petz: Dogz 2: same game in the UK as they are both called Dogz, but have different genres. Petz Dogz 2 and the Petz Dogz 2 on PC are probably different as well, as I assume that on the PC it is a virtual pet version. But that's the american title. --Melon247 14:04, 21 February 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Okay, if that's the case, then Petz: Dogz 2 and Catz 2 (PC) should be deleted and referenced on the Dogz guide, since that one has more information. Also, should Catz be moved to Petz: Catz 2 and Dogz 2 (GBA)? It mentions it is the same game as the Wii and PS2 games and lists all the consoles in the infobox, but we have separate guides for the other systems. Or maybe it can just be deleted and we can add Game Boy Advance to the DS version if they're the same. - najzere 22:29, 21 February 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]
How come no one understands what I am saying!!! Petz: Dogz 2 and Catz 2 (PC) is a different game to Dogz! I've seen screenshots of the game and it's defenitely different. But surely in America you must have some game that's titled Dogz? Because why would there be one called Petz: Dogz 2 but never one just called Petz: Dogz? So, conclusion, I think that Petz: Dogz 2 on PC in the US will probably be Dogz 2 here if it ever comes out. --Melon247 09:35, 22 February 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I just had a look on gamespot on the page for 'Dogz' and it has actually been released in the US as that name[1]. So, now we know that we can keep them as they are. --Melon247 09:36, 22 February 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

We can't keep them as they are, because they both purport to be the PC version of the same game. I still don't understand whether Dogz is different than Petz: Dogz 2 and Catz 2 (PC), so I hope you'll just fix this issue. If they're different games, then take the part about being the PC version of Petz: Dogz 2 and Catz 2 off of whichever one is not the PC version. If they're the same game, then combine them. Thanks, - najzere 14:50, 23 February 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

You're probably just confusing me and you both at the moment, so I'll try to make things simpler.

Hope that ,made you understand a bit better. But if there's one thing I know, Dogz and Petz: Dogz 2 and Catz 2 (PC) are not the same game. --Melon247 14:54, 23 February 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

And I have an idea of what we should do with some of the games here, because some of the games are probably the same like with Petz: Dogz 2 and Patz: Catz 2.
  • Dogz- Dogz and Catz or Petz: Dogz and Catz.
  • Catz- Catz (GBA) (I just saw some screenshots of Dogz for GBA and they're different games).
That was just because some of the games are the same or different or whatever. --Melon247 15:00, 23 February 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I would like to recommend that the Dogz, Catz, and Petz categories have a full explanation about the differences between each game, especially relating to the US vs. UK naming schemes. It is obviously very confusing, so laying it out as best as possible in a table or bullet point format would, I think, help a lot of readers looking for the game they have.--DukeRuckleyTalk | Contribs 15:26, 23 February 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

A Competition[edit source]

Can I have a completely random competition? I'm still in the progress of thinking of what it's going to be about, but I have a fair idea. And the winner gets something probably a bit like a thank you which I will work on. It was just an idea, but then I guess everyone says that you can put whatever you like on your user space... --Melon247 17:05, 21 February 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

If anyone wants to enter, do it here. Hopefully I'll get some more entries because so far the only one is Najzere. --Melon247 19:16, 26 February 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Sounds like fun, but unfortunately I'm not going to have a lot of time between March 2 and March 8. Maybe if you run the competition again at a later date I'll have more time on my hands. Let me know if you do!--DukeRuckleyTalk | Contribs 19:26, 26 February 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I’ve been feeling a bit unmotivated lately. Your contest idea helped a good deal in giving me some motivation to get to work on some things. It should be fun to work on guides for future events. It’s such an awesome motivator to help out some of our completion level 1 guides that need some love.--Zaiqukaj 12:19, 8 March 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I never thought of it like that before. I also feel proud of myself for making that winners template even though I just copied naj's Dog's Life local dog template and changed the wording :D. I think the competition will probably be something held every two months or something so the future for StrategyWiki could be about to change. Bring on the guides! --Melon247 Hammy, my hamster. Cute! Your signature[edit source]

If you want a signature that's too big for the box in preferences, you can put it on its own page and transclude it. If you put it in User:Melon247/My sig, you would put {{subst:Nosubst|User:Melon247/My sig}} in your preferences. - najzereT 16:57, 4 March 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Is there a way of shrinking one of those external image things? I won't put in my proper sig (User:Melon247/My sig) for now because the image is huge. --Melon247
I think you need to resize it in a graphics program and reupload it. - najzereT 16:06, 5 March 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I noticed you've edited recently, so I was just wondering if you were available to come to the meeting on IRC. --Skizzerz 19:02, 7 March 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]
