Extended Support
Hi guys,

Have been meaning to make this post for a while but never got around to it - but here it is finally. Note that this post is probably not final and I'll be editing it slightly over the next few days/weeks.

The TARDIS Rewrite (as well as all of my other addons) are now in what I'm calling Extended Support

My definition of extended support is that the mods will continue to receive fixes to any big issues caused by any GMod update, so they will continue to work for the foreseeable future.

Known issues are unlikely to be fixed unless someone submits a fix to me on GitHub[github.com] - then I will review, test, merge it in and release to workshop if I'm happy with it.

If there is a small feature I can add which would help out extension developers then I would be happy to still do these, for example support to change the sounds or vortex model in their own interiors.

I'm sorry I didn't make this post sooner to let you all know and sorry I haven't been replying much to the discussions, I do read them all and will continue to read them but as you can imagine I can't reply to them all - and I wanted to make a proper post rather than just reply to some random post 'it's ded jim'.

Some Q&A below:

What does this mean for my future on the GMod workshop community?
It sucks to say but it looks like it might be at its end for developing any new addons or significant changes to existing addons. As mentioned will make sure they keep working though.

Why are you moving away from GMod?
There are 3 main reasons: Work, Time and GMod itself.

Work and free time are things I've mentioned a few times in Feature Discussion as a reason for slowed/delayed updates in the past. I've been at my job now for 3 years and I've done less work on the rewrite than I did in half a year while at college.

Doing programming for a living is great, but it means you lose interest in hobbyist work. Coding all day and then coming home to do more coding isn't that fun, starts to wear you down. When I come home or wake up on the weekends I don't want to write code, I want to relax and play games like most of you guys.

GMod itself is showing its age particularly in the development experience. I'm used to debugging tools and advanced IDEs, code intellisense/autocomplete etc. Whenever I've jumped back into GMod Lua in the past couple of years it's not been great to work with. I've also been in the GMod scene for over 10 years now, so it's time to move on to something new.

Are you going to be developing for any other games in the future? Another TARDIS mod or otherwise?
As mentioned GMod is showing it's age, but there is light at the end of the tunnel with the upcoming Sandbox[sandbox.facepunch.com] from the same devs behind GMod. It's essentially GMod but on Unreal Engine 4, fixing all the addon development problems in GMod, addons created in C#, meaning I get all the features I'm used to such as debugging/intellisense. It's going to be fast, new, fun and refreshing so when it's released a bit more widely I'll definitely be experimenting with that. I may even make a TARDIS mod for that! No promises though! :)

Final words

To finish off, just wanted to say thanks for everyone in supporting this addon and I hope you enjoyed, and hopefully continue to enjoy, my contributions to the GMod workshop.

If you have any questions or any kind of feedback please leave it here - hearing how much you guys liked the addon was a massive driving force to keep going with it for a long time, and it's why I kinda didn't want to make this post to shatter many of your dreams (including my own) of a complete TARDIS in GMod.

I'd like to thank those who have been helping out moderating these forums by answering various questions and helping others out without me asking, in particular Gigo, Piehthyte, Brundoob and no doubt some others I have forgotten right now.

Cheers

Matt.

So does this mean that the Rewrite wont be finished unless the extensions add in the missing features?

You will be missed.

So, what will happen to TARDIS Rewrite? Will it never be finished? Will you let someone else take over? I was really excited to see where this addon was going.

Guys, I don't think it's going to be finished. On the bright side, we might get a S&box TARDIS, which, combined with the supposedly infinite map size, should be a blast.

Tardis Rewrite is basically a finished product anyway. The only thing I ask for is Physics Lock and maybe Coordinates Teleporting like the Tardis Legacy.

Other than that I recommend you remove "(Work in Progress)" from the title and just call it Tardis Rewrite.

Thanks for the awesome mods Matt; I've been a fan for a long time.
I look forward to seeing where this community is headed. Whether that leads us to the new "Sandbox" game Facepunch is making or whatever else comes down the line.

Thanks again matey :)

I'm so glad this post is here, it's good that people can see what point you're at and what the future is gonna look like. Good luck in all your future endeavors <3

Sad to see you go but I'm happy you're moving on to better things. It makes sense if working on this is becoming tedious especially with an old engine like Garry's Mod so no one can really blame you for how you feel. I remember when the first TARDIS addon came out and just seeing the development from that to now was one of the best things I could have asked for when becoming involved in this community. Thanks for putting in all this work even if the TARDIS Rewrite isn't going to be entirely finished. I'll admit I haven't heard about the new sandbox game but it sounds like it really improves on some issues that GMod has so hopefully that works out for you and everybody else.

Well its nice too see that it only took a year of nagging for matt to make this post.

Definitely a welcome post, thanks for explaining clearly the situation with the addon and for the fun times I had and will still have with the TARDISes. Best of luck with whatever the future may bring.

Lets be real, the tardis mods are the ones I use the most across all mods, but the rewrite, I ONLY use it for the world portal and extention features (and not even the extention feature as much). So if anyone could apply the world portal and opening doors features to the original tardis mod that has all the good features like targeted teleporting that would be amazing.

Also, Matt, for the love of all that is holy. If you start messing around in Sandbox
MAKE. A. TARDIS. MOD. one that is everything that made the two from Gmod great. I want nothing more. Love you <3

Thanks everyone, it means a lot. I've adjusted the title and description of the mod slightly to reflect that it's no longer being actively worked on.

If people want to contribute features via GitHub or wherever I'd be happy to merge them in and release them.

Thank you for all the hard work you've put into not only your TARDIS mods, but also the WAC, Cores and Doors mods. You're a legend in the Gmod community and your contributions will bring smiles to the faces of many for a long, long time.

Thank you for everything, Doctor <3

It's been great. I've followed these addons for a while, and you've done nothing but amaze. Even if it's not on a platform I use, please, continue to work on stuff like this, be it TARDIS or just other concepts like the portal doors and whatnot. It's the kind of work that enriches the gaming community.
