The 2 chromosomes (each with a single chromatid) are replicated to form 2 double chromosomes (each consisting of 2 sister chromatids).
Mitosis:

Prophase: The cell has 2 double chromosomes (each with 2 sister chromatids).
Metaphase: The 2 double chromosomes align at the cell's equator.
Anaphase: The sister chromatids of each double chromosome are pulled apart to opposite poles of the cell.
Telophase: Nuclear membranes form around the separated chromatids.
Result of Mitosis:

Each daughter cell ends up with 2 single chromosomes, which were the sister chromatids separated during anaphase.
These single chromosomes are equivalent to the original chromosomes before the S phase.
So, the correct process is:

A cell with 2 chromosomes (single chromatids) duplicates during the S phase to form 2 double chromosomes.
After mitosis and cytokinesis, each daughter cell receives 2 single chromosomes, maintaining the same number of chromosomes as the original cell.
If a cell originally has 2 double chromosomes (already duplicated):

It means it has 4 chromatids (2 double chromosomes).
After mitosis, each daughter cell will have 2 single chromosomes, equivalent to the original state of the cell before the S phase.
