Early Access Review
While it has plenty of bugs, some performance issues and isn't quite a complete product yet, what is in it is already impressive. If you're looking for a Silent Hunter clone - I'd say stick to Silent Hunter for the time being, UBOAT puts a lot bigger emphasis on crew management. While the tutorial makes you micromanage the crew to quite tedious levels, if you play in sandbox mode - you're only a click away from whatever you need, almost everything is done for you! If you want to do some of the things by yourself - you can! The simulation isn't as in depth as some would've wanted, but what needs to be simulated and detailed - it simply is. Developers clearly care about the game too, trying to squash all the critical bugs as soon as they can. If things will carry on like this - as everyone else is saying, this game might dethrone the Silent Hunter series!

>spawn as Scout
>cap the point
>mine the road South from the point
>team mates drive into the mine and blow themselves up
>place an IED on the radio
>go to attack the next point to the north
>experience severe PTSD as people die around you
>run out of ammo
>rush enemy positions with only a pistol and few bulletwounds
>die
>respawn
>climb the hills
>spot enemies from afar for your team advancing on the north point
>die by getting shot from behind
>respawn on squad leader
>notice that enemies are taking the south point
>call Pizza Hut to order pizza with double pineapple topping on that location
>IED explodes from disgust
>capitalists are dead
>shout "allahu akbar"
>die again
>keep dying until the round ends
>lose the game
>quit

14/10

On a more serious note though...

The game is VERY teamwork oriented and it's one of those games where you will die... A LOT. But it's fine, it's great fun, especially when everybody in your squad has a mic. Game's mechanics might seem a bit complex at first, but after you get used to them it isn't challenging to remember how everything works. Even if you don't understand something - the community is very friendly and welcoming to newbies, feel free to ask when you don't know how something works!

Why do I recommend this game?

Although it's not yet finished and has some frequently occuring bugs - it's already a playable product that will get better with each update the developers release. It's a great fun whether you're playing alone or with a bunch of friends. And even if you're alone - you can (read: you SHOULD ALWAYS) join a squad and be a cog in the machine. Or if you're a good leader - you can create and lead a squad, coordinating with other squads to achieve victory! If you're not sure if you'll like the game or not - you can try out Project Reality [www.realitymod.com] , which is a free, but a lot clunkier predecessor of Squad with a lot more features in it (at the time of writing this review). Although there are some differences between them, they are mostly the same kind of game. Both have great communities and even some maps are (almost) the same!

And now, the section for the lazy who just want a quick list of pros and cons...

Pros:
  • Somewhat realistic combat
  • Great, friendly community of players (for the most part, at least)
  • Graphics, the game looks great and it runs fairly well on a mid-high end PC (although getting less than 60 FPS shouldn't harm you that much anyway, it's a slow paced game. Also PC specs in the end of this review, for the curious)
  • 40v40 combat, although it isn't the advertised 50v50 (YET, devs will probably add it later down the line) - it's still an enjoyable chaos mixed with moments of uncomfortable calmness
  • You can blow enemies up and pretend you're an ISIS fighter

Cons:
  • No air vehicles or heavy armor as of yet
  • When there's almost no communication between squads or squadmates - you're usually doomed to a boring, chaotic defeat
  • Quite a lot of bugs, most severe one being Mestia map's performance (at the time of writing this review - still unfixed, although it affects only players with certain hardware)
  • Vehicles feel odd, sometimes they feel sluggish and heavier than they really are, yet they turn better than you'd expect them to
  • PTSD is a Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It's a mental disorder that can develop after a person is exposed to a traumatic event, such as warfare or other threats on a person's life. Symptoms may include disturbing thoughts, feelings, or dreams related to the events, mental or physical distress to trauma-related cues, attempts to avoid trauma-related cues, alterations in how a person thinks and feels, and an increase in the fight-or-flight response. These symptoms last for more than a month after the event.

And so, here are the PC specs for the curious...

AMD Ryzen 5 1600 @ stock 3.2 GHz
AMD Radeon RX 470
16 GB RAM @ 2666 MHz
Runs the game between 40-60 FPS at mix of High-Epic settings @1080p
Worth nothing that the game is very GPU heavy, leaving rather low usage on the CPU
