I have recently had some unpleasantness in the online world, gaming and social networking sites seem to have no etiquette. In the best interest of all, I will describe in detail what courtesies I provide as a friend and what respect should be returned in kind.

The first and most obvious is Wheaton's Law, which states: "Don't Be a ♥♥♥♥!". Intended mostly for online gaming sportsmanship, it echos the ethic of reciprocity. This "Golden Rule" is the seed of democracy and is a world wide notion. I personally love jokes, even crude humor but there is a fine line between clever and cruel.

What's in a name? Recognition, identification and if in messaging or gaming, first impressions. Your name, screen name/e-mail, and avatar name all say something about you personally.

Starting with your name: This should be used for professional e-mails and social networking sites. These should be filled out honestly for making new friends and connecting with old ones. A photo also helps as well, I am not a supermodel by any means and yet I have one.

Screen Name: Reflects upon your interests and usually is connected to an e-mail address. It should never contain sexual or racial slang. The other important note is that if it can not be spoken, it is not a name (I.E. `~* Tom *~`@gmail.com) or as I will call it "Prince's law of audible naming".

Avatar name: Sometimes in an online game you can not have the name you want. However, you should name your character in the spirit of the game. It adds ambiance and enhances the gaming experience; calling yourself MilfM8ter, or MasterpWn only makes people think you are 12.
