The Surge starts off with a premise not unheard of - a tech empire that becomes an important company embarking on a journey to save the planet - though its take on this theme is intriguing from the first bits of backstory you get at the beginning. However, from there on, it fails to impress. The combat is painfully slow; I've heard/seen comparisons to the soulsbourne genre, but the problem is it's not just slow - it's also clunky and doesn't feel satisfying when you take down various enemies. It also doesn't help that many of the hitboxes are poorly calibrated, which can make for some very frustrating deaths, especially when the camera can't orient to your position properly. The environment detail is nice, though nothing groundbreaking or memorable.

It is worth note that I was playing with a mouse and keyboard. Perhaps if I had used a controller I would have found more success, though having grown up and playing the majority of my games with mouse and keyboard I don't have confidence it would have made much difference.

I'm interested enough in the story to watch a playthrough on YT and the like, but I'm not interested in the grind to do it myself I'm sorry to say.

This game is a pleasant upgrade to the free version found on the App Store, which is how i discovered it in the first place. It has a charming aesthetic, and evokes memories and feelings of games 20 years ago where developers had to get creative and cram a story, mechanics, and gameplay all onto a byte-sized storage disc. There is a wonderful simplicity to the game, but those looking for deep(er) mechanics won't be left disappointed as once you get past the first few hours, resource management becomes a staple in progressing quicker without feeling grind-y. It's also a fun idler game to throw on a laptop while you binge Netflix on your TV, or while you cook/do other chores - something that's hard to achieve when a game requires you stay engaged. And on the more fun side of things, it has trains! For train lovers of all types, this is a must have.

If you're looking for a story rich game - this is not for you
If you're looking for a game with deep, complex characters - this is not for you
If you're looking for a game that will make you think about everything you know - this is not for you

If you ARE looking for a game with fast paced, addictive, but challenging gameplay - this is definitely for you
If you ARE looking for a game with fun, silly-but-serious characters - this is definitely for you
If you ARE looking for a game with visceral, twisted gore and death - this is definitely for you
And most importantly, if you were a fan of KF1 - this is DEFINITELY for you.

This game is easily still one of the best Assassin's Creed titles to date. It has an amazing story that will keep you on the egde of your seat until the shocking conclusion at the end that only makes you think "Wow". The gameplay is fantastic and easy, and makes everyone able to feel like a Master Assassin!
