Game wouldn't play properly on launch. Tried for 15 hours in the first week of release, ran into too many game-breaking bugs, crashes, and restarts to enjoy it at all. Uninstalled in week 1.

2.0 dropped today. I deleted all saves and clicked to start a new game. Game consistently crashes when loading into a new save game, a replicable issue each time. Crashes occasionally when producing benchmark results. Crashes often while saving Settings.

I have to kill the process using Win Task Manager because the game just freezes and gets stuck drawing over everything else. Even then, sometimes after killing the task, Steam can't detect that the process has stopped because Steam is tracking REDlauncher, which lingers in the background taking up resources until that is also killed by Task Mgr.

Verified integrity of game cache to see if that helps - no change. Now REDlauncher will ALWAYS produce an error: "The instruction at 0x0000000000000000 referenced memory at 0x0000000000000000. The memory could not be written. Click on OK to terminate the program." REDlauncher crashes and the game loads in the background. REDEngineReporter seemingly tries to run when the game crashes, but that also crashes. It's a mess.

Edit: 2.01 patch dropped. Performed complete reinstall, deleted straggling folders/directories, still crashes in the same places. Nothing seems to have changed in terms of replicable crashing. Error reporter seems to be fixed though, so I've sent my crash logs in.

Edit: 2.13 fixed this issue. I've changed the review. The game runs well and runs properly. Many of the launch issues seem to be resolved.

A visual stimulation overload of bullet hell arcade pinball wrapped in neon. Don't expect realism here, there's plenty of arcadey magic movement and explosions and moving enemy obstacles. Very cool!

Gameplay is pretty solid, and these voice actors are doing their best, but this game REALLY tests your suspension of disbelief. The co-op over Remote Play Together works well, but local co-op comes with that strange asymmetrical split screen from RE5. Also, gameplay cannot be paused (In-game menu, even graphical settings, is totally live with gameplay and it even plays in the Steam Overlay or out of focus in Windows) and most cutscenes cannot be skipped. The story feels like the Bourne series' best attempt to be Die Hard, directed by Michael Bay, with this insane soap opera plot web between the 7 main characters. The game showcases it's ability to lean hard towards as cinematic an experience as possible. If that's your kind of story, and you're really up for strapping yourself in (No pausing except between chapters and during death screens), then you'll love it. Best played with a friend, since the AI isn't always reliable.

Amazing. Tactical grid gameplay with heavy unit customization - much like Shadowrun Returns/Dragonfall/HongKong, Final Fantasy Tactics, or to a lesser degree Fire Emblem (Units are gone forever if they die in combat). I made the mistake of thinking XCOM Enemy Within was a separate story expansion for XCOM Enemy Unknown, but I was very wrong. Enemy Within is an expansion that adds content to the main game and storyline, and if you have both, there's no reason to play Enemy Unknown.

Solid re-imagining in itself. Big differences from the original, but that's not a bad thing.

Sometimes you have a sudden realization that the gameplay isn't as tight as it looks. You can't cancel some actions, or your dodge doesn't do much for your hitbox. Nemesis is fun, but his AI could have been better.

I'd wait for a discount.

There doesn't seem to be an option to exit the game from the main menu. But that's okay, because I typically don't want to, and end up staying awake far too late trying to get those damn tokens in the road. 10/10
