Remembered a song from this game and decided to give it another play after not touching it for 10 years. I recalled this game having some Reddit writing but boy howdy does it have some Reddit writing. This game has aged like milk in a swamp. Whether it's the memes that were dated when this was new or the incredibly unfunny Reddit-/v/ hybrid jokes. Cool idea for a rhythm-based RPG that has you juggle multiple charts, but good ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ lord is every other textbox questionable. Would not be surprised if I ran into outright slurs if I progressed any further.

Borderline unplayable grind that just makes you feel awful the entire time. Arguably not even pay2win because the grind is still absolutely horrible with VIP.

As cute and initially enjoyable as this game is, it is not without flaws. I wouldn't necessarily recommend getting this game standalone (especially given the fact that, being a crossover game, you need some familiarity with the original materials) but if you're already getting this game for the sake of using Mixed Poppo in 100% OJ, you may as well play it. Took me about 6 hours? to finish my initial playthrough and nearly another 4 hours to do all achievements and fill out my roster of characters. The later being the bulk of the time spent with the achievements only taking maybe 30 minutes.

I'd say the primary issue with the game is Mixdus. The only way to get new characters through your party is through the Mixdus gacha system which, while 200% free, carries with it a lot of the drawbacks of a gacha. The game's difficulty curve does not offer it any favors either as ALL new characters you obtain come at level 1 and will require grinding up-to-level to do content, after you've already done the grind to get the money to even pull them off of Mixdus. This stifles mid-game creativity in teambuilding and just leads to sticking to one party or one character carrying 2 others for the entire game.

Teambuilding in itself seems to lack the depth of contemporary collect-em-all RPGs due to the lack of team support and synergies. Compounding the selfishness of 99% of the cast, the fact that any damage interaction results in a one or two shot heavily incentivizes sacrificial hyper offense gameplay where you just teambuild for coverage and throw bodies at something until you win, making the aforementioned issue with having to level every new acquisition from scratch much more exasperating. It also highlights the incredible difficulty spikes this game has since there's nothing you can really do except grind to meet the arbitrary stat check due to the lack of strategic options.

That's not to say that the combat system is fully caveman, the utility that some characters bring can be useful. For example, Scholar and Shifu&Robot; the former's debuffs and type changes and the latter's potential to permastun bosses adds some spice to the otherwise binary RPS gameplay.

As for the story and writing, I enjoyed the overall story. I think the narrative elements themselves were honestly pretty good, but how everything is written leaves a lot to be desired, particularly on a character level. As expected from a franchise crossover game, it throws characters at you left and right with little explanation as to who they are, and this combines with some pretty intense flanderization of some already pretty 2-dimensional characters to make a lot of interactions hard to get through (Biggest example being Kyosuke Kyoko at the start of the game). It feels akin to a Touhou fangame's writing where everything is based on decade-old fandom injokes and headcanons that often have nothing to do with the original characters. Except the characters were written like that in the first place.

In summary. Game cute and overall enjoyable, combat binary and simple to its detriment, story good, writing bad. But it's an anniversary crossover game, so what can be expected really.

What you get if DayZ looked even worse than Minecraft while being 3x as boring.
