I picked up Axis Football 2019 to give it a go since this years Madden looks like and plays like you know what. I want to preface this review by saying I went into this game knowing that this is no Madden game, this can’t compete with Madden’s graphics, physics (lel), and gameplay. I also knew that AF2019 did not have the EA budget to even think about taking down this monster. I will not compare it to this years current Madden (or any for that matter) and I will not compare this to NCAA Football (boy do I miss that series). This is also my first Axis Football game and I just want to give the developers my take on this game. So, let’s begin.

Team Customization.
Team customization is not what you think, it’s actually very limited when it comes to editing jersey’s and you cannot edit stadium or logos WITHIN the game. Now you can make mods and edit all this stuff out side of the game by messing with files and such but if you little to no skill or knowledge in that regard, you are stuck with this very limited customization options provided to you. I was excited for this only to be disappointed.

Franchise Mode.
It’s very deep, the UI is amazing, and you can tell where the developers spent a lot of their time. There’s a lot to take in here and it’s more than most Football sims will give you. You can sign players, draft players, perform contract extensions, upgrade training facilities, upgrade stadiums, and maintain all these things. There is team morale, practice management, and coaching staff customization. If you are just into this kind of thing and just simulating all your games your team plays, then this is really good. The main thing franchise mode lacks is career stat tracking and player accolades (Such as MVP of 2019 season or Defensive player of the year 2019). So when guys go into free agency all you really have is their attribute numbers and that doesn’t tell the whole story or immerse you into wanting to sign a guy.

Gameplay.
Alright I watched gameplay before I bought the game and you know it didn’t seem to bad until you play it. This is by far the weakest part of the game. There is a lot left to be desired to be honest and it’s all things you see on the other reviews. Receivers go to a dead stop when the ball is thrown in the air instead of catching it in stride. Pass defense (lol) is about as bad as it gets. The AI will standstill with certain individual players and wont move. Ball carriers phasing through would be tacklers. Most passes go for TD’s. Even the controls on Keyboard, or controller (I tried both) are very clunky. You get my point, this part of the game needs a lot of work.

Is Axis football good? It’s bad but if you don’t want to play Madden, or you’re looking to an alternative to NCAA football, and you can stomach all of these issues then this is game for you. For me, I want a game with a good franchise mode like this but with stat tracking and good gameplay. I don’t like to just sit their and sim all my games or do coach mode all the time and watch the derpy AI do derp things. I want to be down in the action, throw the ball, run with the running back, play defense, and just enjoy it.

So please guys, work on the gameplay, once that is overhauled I believe Axis will start taking off a bit more.

Total Garbage.

10/10 would not buy any new and future upcoming "Total War" games.

--EDIT---

Well grab a seat and heres come the reason. The Warscape engine is probably the worst thing that has happened to the total war series. It breaks the immersion with units literally colliding and going through each other as if the phantoms. Cavalry stops before it hits a unit (Unless you use the trample ability but that's just ♥♥♥♥♥ stupid and that should be a passive ability like in the first rome). I can't stand how units have their imaginable 1v1s individually, when in the first rome you could see individual units double teaming one individual. Artillery was on point, more on point than a ♥♥♥♥♥ howizter and just completely broken.

Then lets get to the grand campaign! Limited armies and navies. Transport ships being stronger than actual navy ships, like serious wtf lmao (Not sure if they fixed that, that was really immersion breaking). No family trees and politics system that wasn't well thought out and is just meaningless. Charging people money to buy factions that are already scripted and in the game (The Greek City states for example). Conquering territories is really easy, build a bunch of happiness buildings in one minor city and proceed to steam roll the rest of the region.

All this game became was a cash grab and it is not even remotely better than the original rome. Hell there are some mods of the original total war game that blow this game out of the water.
