Games like this make me wish there was a "mixed" or "neutral" review option but there is a lot of good and a lot of bad in this game. Do I think you should play it? Probably. Do I think it"s a 10/10? God no.

Positives:

1.) There are some HUGE improvements on the recent Persona formula that I hope they carry over to future projects. An example is how social links work, you will ALWAYS be able to level up the link, no longer do you have to answer questions like a sociopath by just picking the answer you know the link would respond well to.
I can recall multiple times in 5 for example where I wasted a day/night to gain favor with a link because I didn"t have enough good boy points to actually level up the link.

2.) You can select your party member"s power, like the OG persona, this opens a ton of option for your composition. The game tries to throw each character down a certain path but you are free to do what you want as long as the conditions for each power are met. Is it optimal? Probably not, but you can make some busted compositions with it, which is always fun.

3.) Combat initiation, this one I"m mixed on but I love the idea that if you"re over-leveled for an enemy, you can just one shot it and get xp without breaking into a normal battle.
I know this was an option for a specific character in P5 but that was near the end of their social link perks, this works right out of the box in Metaphor.

4.) How traveling/questing works, I like the freedom the game gives you in terms of how to spend the free-time that you have, to travel to a new place can take between 1-3 days so you have to plan ahead and ensure you have time for whatever else you need to get done before the next big event. It makes you have to actively get prepared for dungeons or travel because you can"t usually afford to go back to town and then travel back. Also having deadlines for quests is always welcome.

5.) Presentation, obviously. The music is great, the UI is beautiful and unique, the english VA is very well done outside of maybe the MC.

Negatives:

1.) The story, imo Atlus has never been good at telling great stories, serviceable yes but not great. Their games are usually prop up by interesting characters and philosophical backings. Not this time around, what starts out as an interesting premise quickly falls into a generic one with very predictable twists. The philosophy has been replaced with "racism bad, class inequality bad, unity good" to Kojima levels of beating you over the head with its heavy-handed approach.

2.) The cast, imo P4 had the best cast and despite some flaws, was a group that held up the game where the story couldn"t, I can"t give this game that backhanded compliment. Out of the 6 permanent party members, I"d say 2 of them were actually compelling.

3.) The dungeons, my god the dungeons are so boring and outstay their welcome. It will get to the point where you just run past everything to fight the boss just to get it over with. Once again, I can"t harp on this too much since Atlus has never been good at making interesting dungeons, just different flavors of annoying or exhausting. Also the boss fights are vary rarely interesting which makes the trek through an optional dungeon feel worthless.

4.) The game is short. I usually wouldn"t find that an issue as I prefer shorter games, but I can"t shake the feeling that this game went through some cutting down and rewrites. The early game is a "around the world" competition to win over the population through quests, hunts, and minor story stuff. Around the time you get your 4th party member, the game already feels like it"s rushing you to the end. Whether this is the full intended game or not, I can"t tell you. But I"m sure about 90% of people will be caught off guard by how fast the game goes, especially for an Atlus game.

The most "two steps forward, one step back" game I"ve played in a while.

Boy, I sure do love mediocre movies sprinkled with mediocre combat and unnecessary RPG mechanics with a sad dadcore storyline where the only way that a bad person can redeem themselves is through the eyes of an innocent child. Oh ♥♥♥♥ I just described a portion of Sony exclusives.

It"s just an overhyped walking sim/visual novel held up with a *now* overdone aesthetic and great soundtrack. The lore is interesting, the actual story/execution is done better in older detective point and clicks.

If RE7 was a 9/10 then RE8 would be like a 8/10
There you go.

Runs like ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ even on a 1080ti, counter says 90 yet everything is sluggish and unresponsive and not in a traditional survival horror kind of way more like a "♥♥♥♥♥♥ console port" kind of way.

Long dead, devs ignored for way too long and now everyone is gone. Maybe you should focus on finishing one game before moving to the next, but what do I know.

Maybe now that everyone is moving to the superior game, all the exploiters will end up just fighting each other in this until the end of time.
