I don't really review games, but I figured I'd leave this here in case anyone was contemplating buying this game.

I'll preface my review with this. I'm a big fan of the Dark Souls series (probably over 700 hours across the franchise) and I've been playing Monster Hunter since 4U (with about 800 or so hours across the franchise).

This game is aesthetically pleasing. I like the steampunk vibe. And it has some interesting takes on the soulsborne formula, such as adding attack skills that can be activated at the cost of "ichor" (mana, essentially) to weave in and out of attacks, different classes, etc. But this game falls short on the feel of combat.

Swing an ultragreat sword in Dark Souls and it feels like you're hitting something. Hit a Rathalos with a fully charged Charge Blade hit and it sticks in the monster for a moment as it passes through. There isn't enough of that in Code Vein. I never actually feel like I'm hitting something. My sword swings and the enemy staggers, which is good and fine, but there's no heft. No weight. The only weapon I used in Code Vein that felt "heavy" was the hammer. Where as, if you look at Dark Souls, even the smallest dagger has that weight.

I wanted to like this game. The world is neat. The character design is neat. The voice acting is the right amount of cheesy.
But I can't get past the combat.

Perhaps I was going into this game thinking it was something it wasn't but even looking past that, I can't seem to enjoy what's actually there. Heck, I still boot up older Monster Hunter games just to fight things, because it has the right feel. I wish this game had that, but it does not.

I won't refund this game in case I decide to take another whack at it later down the line (I did get it on sale for $25), but I really can't see myself playing it.
