Early Access Review
Okay. There's a lot to unpack here.
While this review may come off as longwinded, or ramble-y its only because I have a lot to say about my (13ish hours) time with the game, and I really am passionate about survival horror. Yet I also have square brain, and would hope other square brained people like myself read this review before buying. I would like to first address that there are parts of this game that are incredibly unique and I think a really, really solid core gameplay experience, which will hopefully be developed further on as the game progresses through it's lifespan. I also know the game is in early access, so any negative things I have to say about the experience may end up getting fixed or patched out, and I will update my review accordingly. That being said, here's

The Good.

- Uniqueness.
I have never seen a survival horror game with such emphasis on communication and teamwork. You could easily solo a run in the original game if you really knew what you were doing, but in 2? This will prove a far more daunting task. Working together with the other 8 players (when you can, at least) is essential to your survival, which really makes what this game is trying to do special. The foundation is here for a fantastic cooperative horror experience. For example, on a level 1 difficulty run, me and this lovely Chinese man who barely spoke English were the last two survivors. After barely scraping through objective after objective, low on meds, low on ammo, we managed to push our way across the map, through the bridge into filtration and into the central power plant. Once inside, having to manage a horde of 100 zombies, weaving in and out of resetting the generators, keeping the zombies off our backs and trying to survive with barely any supplies left, we both ultimately escaped, my hands still shaking from the experience. This is only one of the many organic moments that will likely happen during your time with this game, should you decide to stick with it.
- Combat.
The item and weapon animations look and feel satisfying (when they're respectively not bugging out), and the sound design is fantastic (mostly. I'll get into this later...). Skull cracks and smashing and slicing gives an intensely cathartic horror punch . Zombies will have chunks of their body sliced, smashed, or shot out which looks super cool and creepy, and gives a real sense of threat to the player.
- Progression
The character leveling / permadeath is a great addition, and makes it so that when you die you have a chance to expirement with different builds & have different goals for supplies / weapons each run. And if you have a character who has everything you would want out of a build, you REALLY don't want them to die. Map design is great, with lots of motifs / environments practically straight out of the previous game. That's pretty much all I really love about the game right now, but then, there's

The Bad.

- Low replayability.
Once you've tried out all of the perks (i admittedly havent gotten every expert perk but regardless) the map starts to feel kind of stale. The random players you get make up for this experience but given the nature of online multiplayer this is a positive and negative thing.
- Zombie vocals. Specifically this one runner zombie's vocals. This one ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that sounds like a Texan doing their best squealing pig impression. Take that ♥♥♥♥ out of the game please for the love of god. Sometimes I'm trying to stay quiet, and sneak past / take zombies out with no sound but that one ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ runner zombie just keeps screeching and I will go out of my way to shoot it 5 times and compromise myself just to shut the thing up. And to be honest a lot of the zombies VA are just so over the top that it can seriously undermine the tension. The original game had more quiet, understated and gurgly voices which made them wayyyy creepier. Shouting at you ≠ scary. I get the devs are going for realism like in a fresh apocalypse kind of way but especially when there's like 5 runner zombies all making the same hog sounds it gets really irritating. Would hope the devs change this.
- Servers.
No offline mode. This would normally be alright, given the games emphasis on progression but the matchmaking sucks right now. Grouping with some people also feels like it vastly raises my ping, or causes rubberbanding. Connection issues and high ping are the standard unfortunately, as you will likely match make into the poopy cloud servers this game is running on.
- Balancing.
The game also feels unbalanced, and inconsistent. Sometimes I've had easier experiences on the higher difficulty levels like 3 , than on the first level of difficulty! My first few level one character runs I would run into the rare elite zombie, or the occasional runner, ramping up slightly more so the closer you got to the center of the map.
Now, I could for example start the match at a mineshaft, go to the gas station objective while not firing a single gunshot, and once I get there, immediately get swarmed by 5 elites, 4 runners, and end up wasting time just sitting on high ground. Not being able to escape. Slowly swatting at everything, until I hear over my radio, that people are already getting close to the power plant. I shouldn't have more incentive to just die and start a new character, than to actually survive, and fight my way to the extraction. There was one single instance where when using global text chat, people actually came to my aid but regardless, some objectives are far easier to take than others. Not sure if this is due to higher leveled players being in the lobby with me, which should not be a thing if that's the case. I'm also not crazy about supplies being the be-all end-all of levelling your characters up. I feel like your match performance itself, as well as how many players there are extracting with you, should affect your score. Because I've had runs where I felt pretty useless in the team dynamic, due to my own freshness in the game, where I've gotten 10-20 levels purely off of supplies and then matches where I'm playing perfectly, and I get only 4-5 levels because of the lack of supplies.
- No infection system. One of the most tense parts about the original game, I truly hope they add it in. But the worst part of the game is definitely

The (B)ugly.

Here is a comprehensive list of all of the bugs I have encountered. I note again, that these will likely be patched out, so this serves as a mere warning of what to expect in early access right now:

- Some zombies are randomly flammable, and should you decide to light them on fire, you will receive righteous comeuppance by taking rapid fire damage even at what you would assume to be safe distances. Fire proximity is WACK right now (maybe my character just got heatstroke and suffered a heart attack idk).
- Getting stuck on objectives. Codebooks, padlocks, wires etc. with no way to leave them and getting downed doesn't even pull you out. Lost a level 50 character to this and I was very tilted.
- Shots and melee swings not connecting / registering
- Invincible zombies
- Objectives not registering even on compass or being non-achievable
- Rubberbanding upon grouping with others
- Constant frame drops and stutters (i7 5ghz boost processor and an rtx 3060 as reference, I get around a "steady" 30-40fps save for the drops)
- Invisible walls, especially around ranger station / that whole lake area

Overall, I can't wait for this game to feel good. Losing a character to bs bugs or glitches happening sucks, but again, it's what you get when a game is released while still in development. I luckily am blessed with the temper to accept the game for what it is, hoping that its very rough edges get sanded off sooner than later. 6/10 as-is but once ironed out I could see this game being a 9/10 survival horror experience.
