Senua's Sacrifice is a very personal and intimate journey. A journey into a broken, twisted, frail mind. As the game warns you in the very beginning, before even reaching the title screen, this is a game that steps heavily into the realm of mental illness, primarily psychosis, with a robust coating of fantasy and a healthy dose of norse mythology. With that in mind, I must say that, despite not being any sort of authority on the subject, I can definitely recognize that a lot of effort and creative work was put into realizing the role of one with a perception so different from the common person. The game oozes with atmosphere and every single aspect has been meticulously crafted with the subject matter in mind, and for that alone it already deserves my most sincere praise. Yet, it definitely does more than just offer a compelling narrative in a compelling setting.

Moving onto the gameplay proper, while there isn't a huge variety of gameplay elements, what is there is, for the most part, quite enjoyable. The combat is definitely well crafted and, despite not featuring a substantial variety of moves and being somewhat simplistic and pretty forgiving in nature, it has a very enjoyable flow to it. Other than combat, you'll be spending a lot of your time traversing the game's landscapes and figuring out the game's numerous puzzles, most of which aren't extraordinarily challenging, but some can be a bit frustrating, requiring you to go on a sort of "pixel hunt" around the screen, looking for particular shapes in the scenery in order to progress. Some sequences can also feel confusing as the game tries not to give you too much direction, but they're nothing a bit of wandering about and analyzing your surroundings won't overcome.

Overall, despite what I'd call some rather minor flaws, Hellblade is an excellent production. It's a product crafted with a lot of attention to detail and, clearly, a whole lot of passion. Highly recommended.

An ingenious twist on the classic mechanics of Asteroids, this game uses your own music to create a much more hetic, intense and enjoyable experience, with a good variety of enemy types, weapons and bosses to spice things up. Extremely recommended.
