Reventure is exactly what you'd hope, and nothing like you'd expect. It's a guaranteed good time.

The game plays out like a basic 2D action adventure game. A to jump, X to attack/use item. Where the true gameplay comes in is how you go about getting the 100 different endings the game offers. Anything from slaying a dragon, romancing a dragon, or feeding a princess to a dragon are all ways to end your adventure. You'll then either wake up in your bed, possibly with a new skin to represent the ending (like having charred skin or becoming Bowsette), and/or find out you're playing the brother/cousin/son/whatever of the previously felled hero.

Although on the surface Reventure looks like a simple action game, it is, at its core, a puzzle game. Though many initial endings are easy and quick to get, others will require some analysis and deduction. The main component to solving the puzzles of how to get each ending is the item weight. Each item you hold weighs you down, limiting your jump height. This will close off certain areas from you. You'll need to bring only the essential components for the ending, as well as determine what those components are and what to do with them.

The game has a "I Want to be the Guy" kind of humor. Where there are plenty of references as well as subversions of video game tropes. That's primarily where most of the endings come from, is from challenging the video game norm. The endings act as punch lines to the set up that is your adventure leading up to them. Some are funnier than others, but they're all worth at least a chuckle.

Some players may find the game becoming repetitive just from having to move about a small world so many times. However, I found the search for more endings to be engaging enough that I never felt bored with the world. Even so, certain endings will unlock shortcuts for you, allowing you to get to locations easier and faster.

This is, without a doubt, one of the best ways you can spend $7.99. It's almost impossible not to have fun with the 100 endings, 50 unlockable skins, and myriad of secrets that populate this unnamed fantasy world. You owe it to yourself to pick up Reventure.
