Meh

This is one of the times where I wish that the Steam reviews system were a bit more fine tuned since this game requires a more nuanced take and can't be boiled down to "recommend or not".

I'm a horror game freak and a huge fan of the original 1979 Alien movie, so when I heard that this game was actually good I was super exicted to play! Unfortunately what I got was not what I was expecting. The game has a really slow start, it takes it's time setting up the Sevastapol and the tone of the game to come, which is welcome. What I didn't find that thrilling is how long the iconic Alien takes to be introduced, which is a down for me personally.

The thing about this game is that it's simply way too long, it overstays it's welcome HARD, even after what I thought was the last mission of the game there were still almost two hours of gameplay left and by then the horror was already completely gone. The second complain I have is that anything besides the Alien itself is absolutely boring or not scary, the human enemies are really underwhelming and the Working Joes are interesting at first but just become frustrating and a hassle later, having to rely on numbers to be a threat to you. The crafting system is also unnecessary and just slow gameplay down.

Being an Alien game, I also expected the titular Xeno to be in a good chunk of the game but unfortunately, it isn't. The Alien is in basically 50% of the game, which in my opinion simply isn't enough since the entire premise of the game, and fun of it, is being hunted by a smart and deadly predator.

Now, the game isn't all bad, it's actually quite good whenever you are being chased by the Xeno. It's AI has stood the test of time, and that creates a really tense and creepy experience, where it really feels like you're being hunted by a smart and observant apex predator. The way the AI works also creates really natural and cinematic cenarios since the creature doesn't actually teleport anywhere and has to use the vent system to move around, which increases tensions and makes the sections where they are present just that much cooler.

Overall I think it's a good game, I would recommend it while on sale since I don't think it's worth the full price.

TL;DR: Too little Alien and too much Isolation. 6/10.

Without any hyperbole, this is the best game ever made. The true test of the indomitable human spirit.

This game is a true and classic survival horror, with a lot of backtracking and non-linear exploration. A must play if you're a fan of the genre.
