I've been playing the game since it first arrived on Steam (Season Zero).

In my opinion, this is a much better take on games such Town of Salem. It features people needing to work together, coordination required, and for the first time, the "bad people" are the majority, so agents need to work carefully and methodically!
The community is fantastic, and the games that can result from it are far more varied and unexpected.

I recommend wholeheartedly to anyone who loves a good social game, is a fan of the whole 80s hacker culture, enjoys good music, or even wants to test their deceptive skills!

It's basically a spiritual successor to Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse.
If you've enjoyed that game and want more of it, buy this!

The game is a bit short, but there is an element of replayability!

RUINER is a high action cyberpunk themed isometric/top-down shooter.

The atmosphere of the game is perfect. It captures the essence of cyberpunk with it's beautiful world and music.
Controls are tight and responsive. Sometimes the power attack doesn't trigger but otherwise it's perfect.
There's quite a selection of weapons allowing you to form favorites, specifically for the ranged weapons. You always have two permanent weapons, but enemies will drop weapons as they die.
Ability tree offers versatility, allowing you to customize your character's powers to better fit your playstyle.
There's a tip in the game saying "Need more Karma, time for sidequests!", honestly I've never felt the need for MORE karma than I already had. At the end of my playthrough I topped out at level 25, the game's max level.
The addition of a Speedrun and Arena mode is well received and can be enjoyable if you're a speedrun or just want to kill things for a while!

? Difficulty is the weirdest point of this review. I've played the game on Normal and for the most part it felt balanced in difficulty, yet some bosses felt more difficult than they needed be. The second to last level was way harder than the last level (mostly because of the decision to have fewer checkpoints). The only difference between the 3 difficulties (Easy, Normal, Hard) is how much damage you receive and how much health the enemies have, which is a very simplistic system.
? New game . NG is, in regards to difficulty, harder than the hard difficulty, but you get to keep all your abilities. There's no real difference between the normal game and new game , so replayability is pretty small.

- The level design, whilst beautiful in aesthetic, can get monotone in structure. The general structure of a RUINER level is formed of paths that lead to a, usually, square arena where you fight a few enemies then proceed again until the next arena where you either fight more enemies or a boss. This becomes more apparent near the end.
- Encounter design, especially near the end. I can't help to feel that the developers ran a bit out of time or ideas around the end of the game when designing boss encounters. I guess it's meant to feel like a "boss rush", but it feels a bit lazy. Being forced to fight the same boss in the same encounter 3 times with no change to pattern is ridiculous, and some of the bosses have the same mechanics as previously fought bosses, either 100% identical, or the encounter gets artificially inflated in difficulty by throwing draining pods during the fight. It's not the worst, but it could've been better...
- Maybe it's just my machine, but the game is a little unoptimized for performance. 720p res, 50% res scale and everything on low and I still wasn't able to play at full 60 FPS, so take in consideration if you have a lower end machine.
- The story. Without trying to give spoilers, the main plot of RUINER is you trying to rescue your brother. I believe there's not enough time for me, as a player, to develop an attachment and desire to save said brother, but rather you are immediately tasked to do it and you just have to roll with it, thus why it feels forced in some aspects and under-developed in others, the ending suffering from this fate.
- This is more pet peeve, but the lack of a "Reset to last checkpoint" is aggravating. It happened once, but I got stuck in a wall with no chance to escape or reset myself, so I had to "Reset level" forcing me to repeat several boss fights because of something out of my control.

In conclusion, with it's flaws, I still enjoyed my time with RUINER. It's a game that greatly emulates how a cyberpunk universe feels and let's you immerse yourself into it. The game takes 5 hours to complete and especially near the end, the formula can get repetitive, so you will need some perseverance.
All in all, I recommend the game for anyone passionate about challenging top-down shooters or cyberpunk. I'd still advice and hope you could get it on sale, but if you think you can put up with the flaws mentioned above, then by all means, go right ahead!

One of my favorite metroidvanias in a while! The speedrun mode and hard mode will keep you coming back!

To put it simple: It's a little unpolished in regards to some things (animation, voice acting, etc), but the coop experience I had was amazing! There aren't many games that do coop so well like Clandestine does, so I'm really glad to see it here and to have experienced it!

Fair warning: Only consider playing if you have a friend to do it with, it makes the experience so much better and worth while (even with the unpolished feeling).

Beta player of hackmud since 3rd of July 2016 under the username UltraHacker25 or XtremePrime

Single/Multi player
The game features two parts. The vLAN and the M.U.D. The vLAN is where you start, being the singleplayer part of the game that also doubles as a preparation for the M.U.D, taking roughly 4 hours, give or take, but the story is alright and sure to keep you plugged it!

Once you're out of the vLAN, you migrate into the M.U.D. (Multi User Domain) which is the multiplayer and main focus of the game!
Here you are allowed to do whatever you want! From figuring out puzzles in order to attack NPCs and steal their GC, to writing scripts using Javascript and running them ingame, contributing to the usermade content, to simply just chatting around with strangers, future allies/enemies!

Mechanics
Most of the game's core mechanic regarding breaching relies on the player figuring out puzzles in order to unlock the NPC/Player locs to breach their system.

The scripts you have equipped determine what your class is. Currently there are 4 main classes in the game: Infiltrator (Show player access logs, transactions logs, balance, etc); Scavenger (Steal their GC, upgrades etc); Architect (More characters per script, more script slots, more public script slots) and Executive (unsure yet, but it's related to the corporations/clans you can make)

Scripting knowledge is not required in order to enjoy Hackmud, but it sure does help to know some. With time and some help from the players, it will become increasingly easier for you to start writing your own scripts and build future tools for the community to use!

Traits
Great and fitting soundtrack
Friendly community
Freedom to play the game in your style
Lovely UI (if you enjoy terminal-like UIs that is!)
Cooperative gameplay and PvP is a possibility
Neat blend of tutorial and singleplayer experience
? A lot of the game happens server-side, so when the server is having problems, you are too.
- A slight bias towards architect (for the moment)
- End game can become a little grindy (for the moment)
- No way to manually defend yourself DURING a breach (for the moment)
- Breaching in the M.U.D. can become a little repetitive

Do you recommand this game?

Hacknet is a game where player takes the role of a hacker in search of the mysterious story of Bit, another hacker.
The game requires the use of the terminal, but GUI is available too for convenience.
For those that came looking for an experience similar to Uplink, I would say for the experience you get in Uplink, Hacknet definitely nailed it. Differences being that Hacknet is more terminal oriented and is more story oriented.
Instead of comparing the game to Uplink, Hacknet can be compared to "Digital: A Love Story", which is also a hacker, story driven game.

Another strong point of Hacknet is the story. The story drives the entire game. It starts slowly, but gets progressively more and more tense, starting to put your abilities to the limit, especially at the end *wink wink*

Do I recommend it? Of course.

I wouldn't have imagined a 10 minutes game could be so deep, depressing and have a really good moral story behind it. Totally recommended. Can't wait for the full game!
