This game basically invented a new genre. The speed and smoothness of play is completely unique among 4X games.

Edit: fixed a typo

Streamlined and scaled up from Dungeons 3, it's a joy to play. Even the simple changes, such as the way Evilness is earned actively from surface raids or the responsiveness of dropping creatures and spells, improve the game greatly and make it hard to go back to Dungeons 3.

There is only one single reason why this isn't the best fighting game of all time: the delay-based netcode.

Amplitude studio's strengths lie in their character design, their lore and world building, and by tuning the traditional 4X formula to add more depth of play style. Being set it space holds back nearly all of these factors, but is still a fundamentally strong game.

Their previous game, Endless Legend, is excellent and easy to recomend to anyone who enjoys the genre. Endless space deserves a recomendation as well, but you need to accept the "in space" setup before buying it.

I wanted to like this game. It had extremely satisfying gunplay, balanced class features, and nice teamwork moments.

What kills this game is an extremely agressive Pay 2 Win model.

All weapons, armor, upgrades, customizations, and unlocks are extremely obviously tiered. Without exception, the next thing you purchase is stronger than everything else before it. A maxed-out weapon will deal nearly 2x the DPS with 1/2 the aim time and 1/2 the recoil of the stock weapons. Maxed-out armor will nearly double your EHP. Maxed-out upgrades will nearly double the length of your specials.

Each weapon and upgrade actually has a power-score associated with it. It's completely obvious that the developers knew what they were creating. They've claimed that they've used that power-score to adjust match making based on how much gear you have, but it is quite obvious that it simply doesn't work. You will be matched as a fresh player with T1 equipment against people who have been playing since the Beta with T6-8 equipment.

Which is a crying shame because the beginners-only queue felt amazing. A potentially great game completely destroyed by a pay2win model.
