A lot of people compare this game to Forager, which is part of the reason I was interested in the game in the first place, but something about the trailer for the game engrossed me. So I put it on my wishlist. I bought the game on sale, told myself that I"d get around to playing it, maybe dip my toes into it later that night. So I did.

I fell in love with the game. It has everything I"d wish for. The progression is cathartic, the music is atmospheric, the art style immaculate.. In the two hours I sunk into my first session, I already fully cleared the first island. Every time I would think "Y"know, it would be nice if I could do [insert feature here]" it"s as if the dev, a lovely guy by the name of David, already thought of it. Things like Hold to click are presented as an accessibility option from the start, while auto swapping is found later on. The presentation of these abilities, as well as the means by which you can improve some of them is absolutely incredible.

I mentioned previously playing Forager. While the game is nice and satisfies an idle game/farm sim/sandbox/exponential number game itch of mine, it"s not without its flaws. I feel as though Outpath looked at Forager and other games similar to it and in its creation, addressed the flaws those games have. You"re able to speed up machine operations fairly early on. moving is intuitive, including the fancy wall running and vaulting you can pull off, inventory management has been a non-issue. The objectives the game lays out for you aren"t something like "get one of every item in the game" or "get an absurd amount of this resource." Rather, the game shows off four items at a time and expects you to learn how to get these items with your ever-expanding toolset, letting you explore your options and see what each island brings.

With all this glowing praise, I do have some slight critique for Outpath, though my criticisms are minor nitpicks that I may just get used to in the time I"m no doubt going to sink into the game. Food in the early game is a bit hard to come by, which might slow down the game a bit. Eating fibers helps, but a part of me wishes I didn"t have to eat a crafting material I feel I might need in the near future. Moving between the islands, at least at my point in progression, requires expending energy/hunger to traverse. Perhaps there"s a tool or other option that"ll mitigate this issue that I just haven"t gotten to yet? Or maybe moving between islands is something that I have to think about doing and not just consider the growing archipelago to be one ever-expanding base, instead having multiple bases of operations. Finally, the hunger fading effect. I"m just not a fan. I get that it acts as a warning that you"re low on food, but it"s really just something that distracts me.

tl;dr, this game is great. One that I"ll be sinking a lot of time into trying to 100%.

a flawless masterpiece in gunplay, customizability, multiplayer, visuals, style.. Even missions that some draw issue with like Morkite Mining are still enjoyable with the right company. Pair with a variety of play styles and unlockable weapons and you have a game you can sink hours into with your friends.

Cons: Alcohol not included.

Damage scaling feels off, making any semblance of progress requires grinding, drop rates are abysmal, and there"s a boss that ignores i-frames as an exclusive gimmick, on top of having completely unavoidable attacks. Enemy stats are incredibly inflated to make doing just about anything an immense grind. Healing items? Takes a grind. Weapon progression? Grind. Levels? Obviously grind. Even with items to boost drop rates and EXP gain, it was a SLOG. Attempting to get all the achievements was even worse. Some achievements are impossible to find without outside help and others require constant consulting of the wiki. Does the game act as a spiritual successor to SotN? Yeah, but it takes the good from the past along with the bad while doing nothing to correct past flaws. Especially egregious considering this was made by the same developer.

fine with friends, terrible with randos.

needs more than a little work, also has mtx which makes the game worse

edit: waited THIRTY DAYS to link my account from EGS when it was free. MTX has only gotten worse. The community is vile.

Play League instead, the community is better.

the game shows promise, but the singleplayer experience is an unbalanced mess, and if you want to see everything the game has to offer, you are REQUIRED to play with friends, as higher difficulties only further exacerbate balancing issues. Add buggy enemies, instant kill scenarios like primed bombers appearing around corners, and hitboxes you can"t really work with and you have a miserable solo experience. It"s lukewarm with friends. Paid DLC before fixing these issues is a but insulting though

4/10

Unoptimized for modern PCs, achievements are RNG based and near impossible to 100%, requires a patch to actually run properly on decent hardware. Some gamemodes are literally just an RNG fest as opposed to being a puzzle which the game claims to be.

Don"t buy this. Bejeweled 2 is better.

Too RNG dependent, microtransactions that allow you to P2W. Pass.

Honestly the worst golf experience possible, would rather remove my fingers individually with a rusty hacksaw than play this ever again. 0/10.
